While traditionally a capital forms the crowning member of a column or a pilaster, these gorgeous carved limestone capitals could serve many purposes from the garden to the interior or, of course, exterior of the home. Hand carved and displaying chisel marks in spots, these capitals showcase classic Iconic styling, egg-and-dart, fluting and volutes. A gorgeous late 19th century mahogany newel post turned and carved from a single piece of wood. It has a balustrade-form body, a smooth base above which are inverted acanthus leaves, topped with an egg-and-dart detail. A smooth section separates the egg-and-dart detail from the intricately carved Art Nouveau organically flowing leaves and berries crowned with classic beading. The newel post has an opening at the top where originally set a newel post light. It is also notched on the back where it sat against the stairs and where the handrail attached. Stunning carvings in the top with a round cornice in relieve with a pair of miniature finials and shell carving details in the center. Besides the spectacular carving details in the top the doors are all relieve paneled. The one on the right with a mail slot and original wooden mail box on the back. Also original bronze handle and lock system in the back too. A fantastic addition to your architectural elements!! CONDITION: As you can see in the pictures they need a good carpenter to work on them, sold as is. MEASURES: 10' 5" HIGH ( 125" ) X 22 1/2" (45" BOTH) WIDE X 2" THICK. What an awesome piece this is! Made from solid oak, this piece is very handsome and also functional. The top and the front carvings are antique and the other sections were made later to make this very custom piece. We secured this piece from a fine estate here in Texas where it was used as a vanity surround. It has drawers and inside storage making it very functional.
