The artistry in the wood is a magnificent examplar of earlier carving and sculpting. Each piece is substantial and satisfying to hold.
Not only are the two sides different from each other, but each piece is a the unique product of the considerable skill and insight exerted by a master sculptor. Every piece is unique, every one a distinctive work of art. At the risk of repetition, there is no other chess set that looks like this, anywhere. For example, each black pawn has unique heraldry on their armor, different from the other black pawns. The horses' expression on the knights are remarkably different from one another, one horse's expression being a genius combination of anger and worry. This is where the sculptor's insight comes into play, as one might expect a given horse to have such a reaction before a battle. It goes on. The caramel colored pawns bear different degrees and styles of facial hair, or are even clean shaven - the expressions not being over-gilded, or over beautified, or overdone with distracting colors - they are what one would actually expect of the titanic and sometimes daily struggles of their heroic day.
Each of the two black bishop's tunics have unique symbols from each other. The caramel bishops are absorbed in strategy - in stunning detail. The generously endowed black queen's miniature carved roses and loyal face, crushingly endearing - and heart wrenching, when one reads the last words of young Anne Boleyn, Queen of England, as she faced beheading at Henry's direction. Each of the black pawns feature full plate armor suit carved into wood, supplemented by detailed scale-armoured faulds. I don't know of any artist who would even attempt such a feat with these types of wood today.
The craftsmanship is nourishing to the mind, stimulating to the play, and presents a fabulous conversation piece. The set will absolutely stand out as a hallmark of distinction for its new owner.

Antique French boulle work game box
Antique French turtle top boulle-work game box with mother of pearl counters or markers. Mid 19th century, lovely condition. Probably used to play Quadrille, a passtime enjoyed in French aristocratic salons. Andre-Charles Boulle, the most famous ebeniste in 17th century France, developed a complicated inlay process of cutting and engraving brass in elaborately scrolled designs and filling in the spaces with tortoiseshell, which was often tinted red. Wonderfully preserved Victorian Ascot horse racing game by Jaques, circa 1900. The golden oak box measures approximately 10†x 3.5†x 3â€. The illustration on the lid is in excellent condition. The six horses are advanced by winding the handle at the side. Most of these that I’ve seen over the years have damages to the horses (missing jockeys, missing legs, tails etc.) The six horses here have all the legs and only minor wear and no other damage. Overall a very fine example of this desirable game.

Extra large French horse racing game – “Jeu de Courseâ€, circa 1900. It measures 15†square. The game has eight horses that go around a track. We have adjusted the horses so that there is no rubbing (a common problem) and the results are truly random. The central cup is used for coins when gambling. It comes with a winning post with a French flag. It is very easy to operate, pull out the silver colored handle by the cartouche and spin the horses. The only minor damage that we can see is a small indentation in the black box lid.
