Five of these fine copper engravings were executed by John Miller (1715-1790) after drawings by Richard Lancake and dated 1757 - the sixth is both drawn & engraved by John More »
Five of these fine copper engravings were executed by John Miller (1715-1790) after drawings by Richard Lancake and dated 1757 - the sixth is both drawn & engraved by John Miller and dated 1758. Each plate measures approximately13" x 8 "and is set within an acid-free mat and a giltwood frame. Note: The dating of these plates would indicate they are from the 6th edition of the Gardeners Dictionary as they predate the 7th edition which was published in 1759.
Philip Miller (1691-1771) was the principal horticulturalist in England during the mid 18th century, and was a long time curator of the Chelsea Physic Garden and an active member of the Society of Gardeners. The Society of Gardeners was a trade union formed in 1724 by prominent horticulturalists of the time to protect the interests of plant sellers, and one of the projects undertaken by the group was to create an illustrated guide to plants currently being grown in Britain. Philip Miller was chosen to organize the undertaking of the Gardener's Dictionary which was first published in 1731, and amongst those artists whose illustrations he used for his publications were Georg Ehret, Robert Furber, John Miller and Richard Lancake. « Less

17th Century Dutch Botanical Engraving from "Hortus Indicus Malabaricus" by Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede Tot Draakestein Circa 1678-93 Dimensions: 25 1/2 inches x 21 1/2 More »
17th Century Dutch Botanical Engraving from "Hortus Indicus Malabaricus" by Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede Tot Draakestein Circa 1678-93 Dimensions: 25 1/2 inches x 21 1/2 inches Rheede was governor of the Dutch colony of Malabar on the south-west coast of India from 1669 to 1676 and from 1684 the chief representative of the Dutch East India Company in India. When not occupied by official duties Rheede was an enthusiastic botanist and investigator of Indian sub-tropical flora. He compiled this work with the help of several Dutch officials, an Italian Catholic missionary Father Mattheus à St. Joseph (who did many of the drawings),a Protestant missionary, native doctors and princes. The engravings were done by B.Stoopendael. Once completed, the works were sent back to Holland where the botanists Jan Commelin and Arnold Steyn added notes ;and published the works between 1678 - 1693. The Hortus Indicus is the first comprehensive work of the flora of the East Indies containing illustrations of a great number of tropical and sub-tropical plants and fruits classified in Latin, Sanskrit, Arabic and Malayam. One of a kind, it was, and still is, considered a major reference of work for botanists and herbalists studying the flora of South Asia. ; The engravings are sandwiched between two sheets of glass and are framed within an ivory resin frame.
