An absolutely exquisite antique French jewelry or desk top box with rococo brass and tortoise shell inlay on both top and front. The Boulle work is simply breathtaking; intricate foliate motif elaborately spread across the entire surfaces of ebonized pear wood. On top there is a central cartouche that has NOT been monogrammed; so it's ready for yours. Condition is very good. Brass fittings sturdy, but the key is missing. A little drying to the tortoise shell, minor age related hairline cracks and some loss at two of the corners. In no way detracting from the beauty of this piece; the losses well hidden in the exceptional detail of the work. Also there is a stain in the bottom corner of the dusky pink silk lining. Perhaps a bit of perfume spilt once. The size of the casket would easily lend itself to the storage of expensive perfume vials. But I would emphasize versatility for this casket; it would look wonderful on a fine antique desk for letters, envelopes, whatever you like!   « Less

Nice hand carved jewelry casket of exactly the sort that Black Forest is famous for. Topped with birds in a foliate setting, each drawer is beautifully carved with floral decorations on textured grounds. The back of the box is engraved. The drawers are lined with purple silk satin. Condition is fair. This piece has taken a tumble and there are missing parts here and there; please see photos which clearly show all the losses. It's overall appearance remains quite decorative. This is one very lovely box, made in the Holy Land, and brought back to England as a keepsake. It is covered in opalescent mother of pearl with abalone accents with a Star of David design on top. It is lined with the original red silk. A real beauty! Condition is very good: two flaws, the hinge has been replaced and is a tiny bit loose, and there has been some minor damage to the pearl at the base. Very Victorian Romantic painting of a woman's head in profile, smelling a large pink rose. Hand painted and signed by the artist, the portrait is encased in an asymmetric cartouche edged with thick gilt rocailles. Surrounding the cartouche, 2 good hand painted roses and a subtle foliate motif, all on a pink ground. The edges of the lid and bottom are gilt. Condition is very good to excellent; no wear, loss, chips, flakes, crazing or hazing. Perhaps a hint of loss to the thick gilt rocailles. I cannot actually find any loss or wear, but...........erring on the side of caution. Perhaps a microscope would show some ;) Utterly feminine piece, beautifully wrought, gorgeous! The jar is large: 5.5" diameter, 3" tall. It is marked "D & Co/ France", the mark for Delinieres & Co, Limoges; in use from 1894-1900. Stunning addition to your collection.   « Less
