PETIT PATRE is a cheese which was made in France - I believe it was a soft cheese like a Brie or Camembert. This poster was made to show all of the wonderful situations in which Petit Patre could be served and boy oh boy, there seems to be no end of those... serve it your kids, serve it to your mother in law, serve it to the guy in his underwear ... the poster is enormous, full of color and humor and just too much fun! Measuring 45 x 61 inches, signed by Pierre Feve, this poster is mounted on linen and in excellent condition I think this poster would be great anywhere - a kitchen, a restaurant, a country house... any place that needs a hit of color and humour... and if ever you need an idea of where to serve cheese...

Duche, Jeanne
7 x 8 (Matted to 12,5 x 14)
Pochoir is the French word for stenciling, a form of coloring pictures that dates to a thousand years ago in China. It was introduced to commercial publishing in France in the late 1800s, and there it had its most exquisite expression. The pochoir process would use from 20 to 250 different stencils applied to a black-and-white collotype print from a photograph. The collotypes are affixed to stencil sheets of metal or board, and the patches to be colored are cut out. Each color to be applied uses a separate pompon, or brush of coarse, shortly-cropped animal hair, to sponge or dab on the paint. Each stencil is done in turn until the image is finished, so it is essential to place the stencils exactly in position. This wonderful pochoir is signed Jeanne Duche and seems to be for a candy (bonbon) company called TONTON BONBON: a very dapper gentleman is showering waiting children with bonbons... on a lovely silver background the colors fly off the page.

''The effect is arresting: paging through the leaves of a pochoir- illustrated book, the reader is abruptly stopped by the extraordinary effects of lush, vibrant colors and bold geometric shapes. Bright oils and watercolors seem to come alive on the page in an almost three-dimensional experience. These volumes, with their focus on patterns and color interactions, use a stenciling technique to present decorative arts and the possibilities of book printing. In fact, pochoir is the French word for stenciling, a form of coloring pictures that dates to a thousand years ago in China. It was introduced to commercial publishing in France in the late 1800s, and there it had its most exquisite expression. The pochoir process would use from 20 to 250 different stencils applied to a black-and-white collotype print from a photograph. Each color to be applied uses a separate pompon, or brush of coarse, shortly-cropped animal hair, to sponge or dab on the paint. Each stencil is done in turn until the image is finished, so it is essential to place the stencils exactly in position. ... pochoir illustration had its heyday in the 1920s...'' (taken from the University of Cincinnati website - because I couldn''t have said it better myself!) This wonderful, detailed and highly colored pochoir is signed the master of pochoir design Eugene Alain Seguy. He was one of the foremost French designers at the beginning of the 1900''s, and worked in both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles - with folios that were awash with bright colors that only the pochoir process permitted. Collections of prints like those produced by Seguy provided source material for designers of fabrics, wallpaper, ceramics, book illustrations, posters, and advertisements, and were popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Insectes Folio was produced in 1924 and this was the cover for the folio. Purchased in Europe, the sheet measures 12.5 x 19, is not mounted on linen and evidences some creasing (B+ condition) . PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF OUR PRINTS, POCHOIRS AND POSTERS ARE ORIGINAL, NON REPRODUCTION WORKS. Thank you! Jean DÕYlen "After several years as a designer of jewelry, d'Ylen became a full-time posterist in 1919 and signed an exclusive contract with Vercasson in 1922. He may have owed the job offer to the fact that he was a sincere admirer and disciple of Cappiello, was was the previous star of the Vercasson shop, and this the firm was assured of an uninterrupted flow of designs of unbridled exuberance that had been Cappiello's trademark." I havent been able to find a record of this particular poster in any poster book or guide - nor in the listings of most major poster dealers... I'm not clear what MIK was, but it is safe to assume that it was some kind of beverage that one could drink at any time of the day or night (Matin, Midi, Soir - Morning, Noon or Evening). Signed by d'Ylen, printed by Vercasson, the poster is in excellent condition, is linen-backed and measures 23.5 x 15.5 inches.
