The Réaumur scale (°Ré, °Re, °R), also known as the "octogesimal division",[1] is a temperature scale in which the freezing and boiling points of water are set to 0 and 80 degrees respectively. The scale is named after René Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur, who first proposed something similar in 1730.[2]
Réaumur’s thermometer contained diluted alcohol and was constructed on the principle of taking the freezing point of water as 0°, and graduating the tube into degrees each of which was one-thousandth of the volume contained by the bulb and tube up to the zero mark. He suggested that the quality of alcohol employed be such that it began boiling at 80 °Ré — that is, when it had expanded in volume by 8 %. He chose alcohol instead of mercury on the grounds that it expanded more visibly, but this posed problems: his original thermometers were very bulky, and the low boiling point of alcohol made them unsuitable for many applications. Instrument-makers generally chose different liquids, and then used 80 °Ré to signify the boiling point of water, causing much confusion. In 1772 Jean-André Deluc studied the several substances then used in thermometers in the light of new theories of heat and came to the conclusion that mercurial thermometers were the best for practical use; for example, if two equal amounts of water at x and y degrees were mixed, the temperature of the result was then the average of x and y degrees, and this relationship only held reliably when mercury was used. From the late 18th century mercury was used almost without exception. These thermometers, the stems of which are graduated into eighty equal parts between the freezing and boiling points of water, are not Réaumur's original thermometers in anything but name.[3] « Less

French Empire Barrel Form Mahogany Bergere with Ram Head Mounts, circa 1830-60
Visit us at www.sillafineantiques.com for a full slideshow of pictures as well as a large selection of other fine furniture!
This is a beautiful work of art with incredible swirled mahogany veneers. The crest is decorated with a vase over acanthus leaves, swirls rising from the vase to culminate in a four petal flower, each flanking a round floral motif, the square exposed arms wrapping around the back to terminate in incredibly cast Ram Head brass mounts. The arms flank a broad and quite comfortable upholstered seat, back and arms, each with a "bee" decorated upholstery. Sloped arm supports complete the frame, resting into a straight straight apron with pierced anthemion mounts flanking a round patera. The knees are topped by round patera designs as well, each front leg being square and tapered, the rear legs square and softly backswept, all terminating in original brass casters.
This is a gorgeous chair and an absolute work of art. In quite rare form with all original mounts, each cast with incredible detail, this is a wonderful find for the collector of French Empire. It is sturdy in all joints with a strength throughout capable of enduring several generations with your family.
Measurements:
31 1/2" wide x approximately 31 1/2" deep x 33 5/8" high to crest; 17" high to seat

Fine French Louis XV Style Ebonized Gilt Bronze Mounted Game Table

This is a fine and visually interesting antique game table. With an understated glow throughout, the table has wonderful play between the gold gilt bronze mounts, the shiny brass work and the nearly black surfaces. The top has a scalloped and curving rim, flowing symmetrically in the Louis XV spirit. A brass half-tubing wraps the rim, brass inlay highlighting the legs, apron and top. The table rests over lightly cabriole legs, each terminating in a gilt bronze or metal sabot. The frame construction is incredibly unique, allowing the rear legs to pull out in a drawer fashion, smoothly creating a level plane for the top to flip back over, revealing a large game table surface. The tooled black leather surface appears to be original, with gilt highlights along the edges. A large storage space is hidden within the table, revealed only when the back legs are pulled out. Oak secondaries make up the underside of the frame.
This is such an incredible piece, being quietly restrained in the typical décor of a Louis XV piece, with clean elegance crafted into every portion of the design. A great deal of thought went into the expanding leg design, which would typically be gate leg in a lesser form. By using this construction design, the table is just as stable in opened position as it is when closed against the wall. This allows it to be a fully functional games table, rather than primarily a decorative piece, remarkably showing fine finished inlaid surfaces even when it is opened as a game table.
This is an outstanding find for any home with a French taste or flare for the Louis XV design.

Khmer Bronze Hevajra, 12th/13th Century

Khmer Bronze Hevajra, 12th/13th Century
This Hevajra has eight heads that are built up on three levels and sixteen arms radiating around him. The Hevajra's short sampot has a sash hanging in the front and is decorated with dangling jewels.
The god is shown in dancing pose reminiscent of images of Shiva Nataraja. The three heads in the lowest tier may represent the Buddha with the bodhisattva Lokeshvara and Vajrapani, while the middle row of four and the single upper head may suggest the five supreme Buddhas or Jina. The grooves on his feet indicate that the apparent two are in fact four. The bronze is intact with no repairs and has an excellent patina.
Tantric Buddhism, also known as Vajrayana and the Diamond Way, of which Hevajra is the most important deity, increased in importance in Cambodia from the eleventh century onwards. Hevajra Tantra was brought to Cambodia during the Khmer Empire and was practiced both in Cambodia and Thailand from the 10th to 13th centuries.
Up until Jayavarman VII, Brahmanism and Shiva worship was predominant. Jayavarman VII was responsible of changing the Khmer religion to what was thought to be a form of Mahayana Buddhism, although recent research shows that tantric influence has been greater than previously imagined. Earlier, when bronze figures of tantric deities were found, they were considered to be of lesser importance as they were interpreted as representing a minority in the religious sphere. Recent evidence shows that the tantric cult indeed was of a greater scale than what has been previously thought.
This is an authentic Khmer bronze that was purchased from an antique dealer in Bangkok in the mid-1990’s. It is 20.25 inches tall.
