Not having found a similar example, I do not know if this mustard pot is American, English or Continental. The glass body, with its design of stylized scallop shells, is formed in a three-part mould, and the hinged pewter top is of good weight and secure. It probably dates from the mid-Nineteenth Century and is about four inches tall, 2-1/2 inches in diameter, with a stemmed base about 1-3/4 inches in diameter.   « Less

In an unusually fine state of preservation, this finely detailed sculpture is in the Sino-Tibetan tradition, revealing the Buddha seated in meditation (dhyanasana) on a double-lotus plinth with his hands in the dhyanamudra gesture and holding the image of a crenelated pagoda. In courtly attire, wholly covered in foliate scroll-work and having figures of the Buddha in the pose of teaching on the front as a pectoral and on the back two images of the Buddha with hands in the gesture of peace (ahhayamudra) and at the point of final entry into Nirvana (parinirvana.) Probably a Chinese statue manufactured in Yunnan or Sichuan Province, suggested by the style of the base, the symbolism depicted on the robes seem to indicate the piece was designed for import to the Lamaist Buddhist areas of Western Asia, Mongolia or possibly Tibet. It is highly unusual to find examples as intricately detailed and complete as this one, or ones that have not suffered over-cleaning and/or resurfacing. Chinese, late Sixteenth or early Seventeenth Century, the statue measures approximately 16-3/4 inches high by 11 inches wide by eight inches deep.   « Less

An elaborate design of a fan, a banner, a saki keg, etc., floating in swirling seaweed and Buddhist symbols covers the sides of this dramatic hibachi, or Japanese brazier. The top bears an equally elaborate design of ho-o birds and flowering kiri (paulonia) branches, symbols of the female principle and the Empress. Here and there the glaze is interrupted to reveal motifs with molded detailing that have taken on the iron-oxide toning of the porcelain body, lending a remarkable depth to the overall effect. The hibachi, in perfect condition, is late Nineteenth or earl Twentieth Century and is approximately 18 inches in diameter and 12 inches high.   « Less

Carved of fine, evenly colored rosewood with burl tops, each stand is approximately 9-1/2 inches in diameter and 6-1/2 inches high, the top surfaces 6-1/2 inches across. Probably carved in China in the early Nineteenth Century, they are in excellent condition, with finely wedged construction for added strength.   « Less
