Born of Illyrian peasant stock, Licinius More »
Origin: Europe
Circa: 18 th Century AD to 19 th Century AD
Collection: Coin Jewelry
Style: Roman Gold Coin Ring
Medium: Gold
Born of Illyrian peasant stock, Licinius advanced in the army and was suddenly elevated to the rank of Augustus by his friend, Emperor Galerius. Galerius hoped to have him rule the West, but since Italy, Africa, and Spain were held by the usurper Maxentius, while Constantine reigned in Gaul and Britain, Licinius had to content himself with ruling Pannonia. When Galerius died in 311, Licinius took over Galerius' European dominions. In 313, he married Constantine's half sister Constantia and defeated the Eastern emperor Maximinus who shortly thereafter died. Licinius thus added the entire eastern half of the empire to his dominion. During the campaign against Maximinus, Licinius had made his army use a monotheistic form of prayer closely resembling that later imposed by Constantine. On June 5, 313, he had issued an edict granting tolerance to the Christians and restoring church property. - (FJ.7173) « Less

Antoninus Pius is regarded as one of More »
Origin: Europe
Circa: 18 th Century AD to 19 th Century AD
Collection: Coin Jewelry
Style: Gold Coin Ring
Medium: Gold and Silver
Antoninus Pius is regarded as one of the "Five Good Emperors" in Roman history. He was born in 86 AD. Around 133-136, he served in Asia as proconsul, and there he earned the respect of Emperor Hadrian. After Hadrian's return from the Jewish war, Antoninus was made a member of his council not only on grounds of friendships and family connection, but also because of his experience as a jurist and administrator. After the sudden death of Lucius Aelius Caesar, Antoninus was officially adopted by Hadrian on February 25, 138 as successor to the throne. After administering the imperial offices, Hadrian died and Antoninus became emperor. Antoninus married Faustina and they had four children: two sons and two daughters. However, only one daughter was alive at the time of his adoption by Hadrian. Later, he adopted Marcus Aurelius, who was to be the successor to his throne. In 139, he gave to Marcus the name of Caesar and made him consul designate. In 146, Aurelius was recognized as Antoninus's colleague in rule, and the hopes of Rome and the fortunes of the dynasty rested upon him. Antoninus managed to govern the empire capably and yet with such a gentle hand that he earned the respect, acclaim, and love of his subjects. - (FJ.7174) « Less

Alexander the Great, son of Philip II of Macedon, More »
Origin: Europe
Circa: 18 th Century AD to 19 th Century AD
Collection: Coin Jewelry
Style: Gold Coin Ring
Medium: Gold
Alexander the Great, son of Philip II of Macedon, is arguably the most important historical figure in the ancient world. Born on July 20th, 356 BC, he was an astute, if somewhat headstrong student, and was schooled by various famous teachers, notably Aristotle. By the time of his death at the age of 32, he had personally supervised one of the largest land-based military expeditions of all time, and had conquered the whole of the then known world from Asia Minor across the whole of Persia, Anatolia, Syria, Phoenicia, Judea, Gaza, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Bactria, parts of India, Afghanistan and Pakistan. A legend in his own lifetime, he became known as much for his excesses and cruelty as his extraordinary military prowess but was nonetheless a comparatively fair and temperate man. Perhaps due to his supposed descent from Achilles and Herakles, he essentially became deified during the Hellenistic period. The Greeks celebrated Alexander in art and song, and his legend continued under the Romans, who had a fascination with military campaigns and tactics. - (FJ.7176) « Less

The intricate craftsmanship of this More »

Style: Classical Revival Coin Necklace
Medium: Gold
The intricate craftsmanship of this stunning gold coin pendant and necklace aspires to recreate the glories of antiquity. Created during the Classical Revival, a period where modern Europe looked towards the past and reinterpreted the ancient forms of Greece and Rome anew. This trend was the product of a heightened comprehension and increased awareness of the treasures of the past derived from excavations in the new scientific field of archaeology. Perhaps the Classical Revival also reveals a latent longing towards the Arcadian lifestyles of yesterday abandoned as Europe rapidly industrialized and urbanized. Thus, the gold of this necklace becomes even more spectacular. The centerpiece of the pendant is a gold coin imitating the style of those minted under Severan dynasty that ruled Ancient Rome. As the world changes, doubt and fears over the future forced some to look towards the simpler times of antiquity for security and inspiration. The lasting popularity of the Revival is surely also influenced by the creation of a new class of noveau riche aristocrats attempting to connect with the language and style of wealth and the elegant aura of Greece and Rome. A woman wearing this necklace evokes both the image of a Roman priestess in a toga and a Victorian princess in an evening gown. Overall, this necklace demonstrates that the timeless beauty of a classic never goes out of style. - (FJ.7255) « Less
