Often stamps of this size were used to create wax seals that were suspended from the documents. While reminants of wax seals often still accompany documents from the middle ages the original brass stamps such as this one are exceedingly unusual and rarely come up for sale on the open market.Provenance: Ex collection Paris FranceAdditional Information: Stamps such as these were the origin of the phrase "Seal of approval"For an example of a wax seal see Sotheby's Sale W02853 Lot 315. Paint is in sad, but original condition. Both stallions were made in Spain of beachwood and are a matched set. Perfect to mark the entrance of a restaurant, retail shop, hunt club, manor home, rodeo, riding school, circus, clubhouse, racetrack, family room or anywhere the horse lover in you can imagine.
