The Egyptian Revival, although anticipated by Gianbattista Piranesi in his Egyptian decorative scheme for the 'Caffe degli Inglesi' published in his Diversi Manieri di Ornare More »
The Egyptian Revival, although anticipated by Gianbattista Piranesi in his Egyptian decorative scheme for the 'Caffe degli Inglesi' published in his Diversi Manieri di Ornare i Cammini of 1769, reached its zenith in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, due to the publication in 1802 of Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Egypte by Baron Dominique Vivant-Denon. This series of engravings, promoted by Napoleon to glorify his campaign in Egypt, started a fashion known as Retour d'Egypte which spread rapidly throughout Europe. This console or side table is apparently unique, although the scale and type would indicate that there was once a pair to this example – now seemingly lost. Several related examples are known, however, which include: a pair made around 1820 for the Palazzo Ducale in Lucca, now located in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, for which the design by the celebrated Lucchese architect, Lorenzo Nottolini (1787-1851), survives in the State Archive in Lucca; one in carved white marble and one giltwood, both also in the Palazzo Pitti; and another with bronze detailing on a mahogany frame, also attributed to Nottolini, in the Villa Medicea di Poggio a Caiano.A further comparison may be made with a chair in the collection of the Villa della Petraia in Florence, which has the same concave and vertically fluted frieze to the cresting rail (seemingly a leitmotif of Nottolini’s) and a conforming seat rail, both decorated with Egyptian motifs. This chair is part of a suite of seat furniture for the Camera della Musica, that was probably supplied by the cabinet-maker Gaetano Cambi, to designs by Nottolini, as part of a refurbishment by Maria Luisa di Borbone in 1820. Intriguingly, this room has a carved marble chimneypiece by Gaspero Bargioni, to designs by Nottolini, decorated with hieroglyphic back-panels in an almost identical manner to this console. - (X.0515) « Less

Fine matched pair of Fineberg Hartford CT hand made Queen Anne Style mahogany night stands c1930-50.Each stand measures 17 inches square by 28.5 inches and are made from the finest matched mahogany. Each stand has a single drawer made with superb hand cut dovetails. Fineberg Furniture was located in Hartford CT Abraham Fineberg came to Hartford in 1929. Like Nathan Margolis, he was born in Lithuania. After a brief sojourn in London he arrived in the United States at the age of 16, working first in Portland, Maine. From 1929 to 1932 he worked on and made furniture in the Southern New England Ice House building on Farmington Avenue. The Winick brothers’ father, Samuel Winick, operated a store located next door.In 1932 Fineberg moved to the upper floors of a three-story building on Church Street on the site of the present Hartford Stage Company.Abraham Fineberg and his son, Israel, made fine pieces of furniture to order. Clients would select designs, often from Lockwood’s and Nutting’s books, and Fineberg would make sketches to come up with a suitable design. Pieces were often scaled down from the originals to conform to contemporary needs. Pembroke tables, for example, are downsized to serve effectively as lamp or end tables; the original are somewhat bulky for this use, being essentially tea or breakfast tables.Israel Fineberg today describes his father as a painstaking craftsman who took great personal pride in his work and strove for perfection. He would work long hours to get things right and then felt reluctant to part with his children. The furniture produced by the two Finebergs is rarely marked in any way to distinguish it. Only people that know their work recognize the cabinet work of A. Fineberg.Abraham Fineberg passed away in 1963. His son Israel then took over the business. Israel passed away on October 26, 1997. This wonderful hand made hand hewed console table was made from a single 18th century pine board with straight tapered legs, bread board ends and wooden pin construction by a local master craftsman. We have a master craftsman that has agreed to painstakingly make hand made tables in the Early American 18th centur ymanner. These are tables who's size and quality and design we can just not find in our daily searches for fine antiques. They are made by hand with antique block planes which give that lovely hand hewed look. Each tables size is determined by the size of the 18th century board we find, no two will be the same. Early boards have the most beautiful deep rich patina which simply can not be duplicated with new boards. The top board retains all its original wear which gives it the true period look that is the most desirable. This table measures 65 inches long,18 inches deep, and 30 inches high « Less
