Multi-coloured version. Double base line painted in lustre. Decorated in the round with decoration to the front and the reverse. Vent hole to the underside. This piece represents characters from the Robert Burns poem, ''Tam o'' Shanter. Set in the late 18th century Ayr. Book reference,''Sherratt? Victorian, circa 1840 Staffordshire bust of the Primitive Methodist, William Clowes (1780-1851). He was born at Burslem, Staffordshire, on 12 March 1780, son of William Clowes, potter, and of Ann, daughter of Aaron Wedgwood, grandson of Gilbert Wedgwood and employed during his early years as a working potter. He was one of the founders of Primitive Methodism, and became one of the best-known preachers of the new society. Plaque to front of pedestal base with inscription ''W.M. CLOWES primitive methodist preacher''. Decorated all round. Printed maker''s mark to reverse ''B.S. & T. BURSLEM''. This is the mark of Barker, Sutton & Till, Sytch Pottery, 1834-1843. Generally good. No hairlines. Small flake to left arm and another underneath jacket. Slight wear to back of head. Kiln effect: stain to top of head. Extensive repairs to base.
