Victorian, circa 1860 Pair Staffordshire figures of a russet and white cow standing by a stream. Milkman in front of one, milkmaid in front of the other, both holding a milking pail. Modeled on a naturalistic oval base with shredded clay decoration. All four legs of each cow are molded free. Dull gilt decoration and base line. Decorated all round. Vent hole to underside. Good. Milkman: Kiln effect: overall crazing. Repair to right arm. Repaired shrinkage crack to left arm. Restoration to hat brim. Restored chip to cow''s left horn. Retouching to the ground and shoes. Milkmaid: Flaking to hat brim and tip of cow''s left horn. A few paint losses to the ground and her underskirt. Kiln effect: overall crazing. Restored chip to underside. The girl has two bundles of corn in her lap. Two legs of each cow, and one leg of the boy are molded free. Shredded clay decoration to the ground and tree. Dull gilt decoration and base line. Cream interior and underside. Cover with a salamander forming the finial. Cream underside. Stand with green mossy ground around a green center. Green reverse with three stilt marks. Impressed maker''s mark ''M.MAFRA CALDAS PORTUGAL'' to underside of each piece. Good. Ewer: Minor flaking to the moss. Flake to eye of handle lizard and tail of larger crocodile. Two chimneys, each with a decorative hole. Ochre interior with three stilt marks and vent hole to underside of cover. Washy ochre glaze to underside of base. Generally good. Box: Flaking around the base edge and to rear corner. Slight wear to the other rear corner. Kiln effect: glaze miss to inside rim. Thin glaze around base rim. Four restored chips around the rim. Lizard, frog, stag beetle, moth and an eel/worm along with leaves and ferns molded around the edge. Mottled brown and cream reverse with cobalt spots. Good. No hairlines. Chip to tail of smaller fish. Flake to lizard tail and moth eye. Kiln effect: shrinkage crack to stag beetle horn. Turquoise interior. Turquoise underside with impressed and painted maker''s marks. Stand in the form of a scallop shell with coral molding around the center, inside which the bowl stands. Three lily pads molded at the shell base. Turquoise reverse with impressed and painted maker''s marks. Good. No restoration. Bowl: Slight wear to interior. Kiln effects: some roughness to the glaze in places; crazing to interior and exterior of nautilus shell; uneven glaze application around the rim. Stand: Small ''nibbled'' area to rim. Each panel is decorated with a stork amongst reeds and pond lilies. Bamboo molded handle and dragonflies on top of the dome. Green interior with a painted mark. The stand is molded with pond lily leaves and flowers around the edge on a light green ground. Mottled green and brown glazes to center and underside. Painted mark in reserve to underside.
