Historical Context: This coin was minted in MILETOS about 515 to 480 BC. Miletos was located on the southern coast of IONIA in western ASIA MINOR. It was minted during the 4th Century BC. It was one of the earliest mints, though its prosperity was greatly curtailed following the defeat of the Ionian revolt against Persia about the early 5th Century BC. It was the "Mother City" of many famous colonies, including Abydos, Kyzikos, Sinope, and Pantikapaion.
