Victorian, circa 1880 Pair Staffordshire cockerels/roosters (possibly matched. Gilt almost rubbed off on one) with molded feather details picked out in bright gilt. Combs, wattles and eyes decorated in red enamel, beaks and pupils in black. Bright gilt base line and foliage decoration to the ground. Vent hole to reverse. Similar pair illustrated figure 2822/2823, page 230, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. Generally good. Right facing: Two flakes to upper base edge. Some rubbing to gilt. Wear and scratches to reverse. Kiln effect: shrinkage line along the mold join to tail feathers. Restoration of comb and wattles. Left facing: Gilt almost completely rubbed. Victorian, circa 1860 Staffordshire ''Death of the lion Queen'' figure modeled as Ellen Bright the lion trainer. Niece of George Wombwell, the menagerist, in 1850 whilst performing in Chatham with a lion and tiger (decorated as leopard) the latter seized her by the throat and killed her before she could be rescued. The affair led to the prohibition of such performances by women but the leading menageries continued to have ''lion kings''. Molded on a gilt titled base with a leopard standing on its hind legs to her left and a recumbent lion to her right. Vent hole to underside. Good. No cracks. No hairlines. Rubbing to gilt. Kiln effect: craze lines to her left arm and chest. Repair to hat feathers. Restored chip to leopard''s left ear and hip. Victorian, circa 1860 Pair Staffordshire figures of a young boy and girl, possibly the Royal children, each lying on the back of a russet and white spaniel. Dull gilt base line and decoration to the girl figure. One arm of each child and three spaniel legs are molded free. Vent hole to undersides. Painted mark to underside of the boy figure. Similar pair illustrated figure 2243/2244, page 147, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. Good. No restoration. Boy: Small flake to base edge. Pre-Victorian, circa 1830 Early pair Staffordshire Sherratt-type table base figures of Elijah and the Widow. Both figures modeled sitting on a naturalistic base in front of a bocage tree. Elijah is feeding bread to two ravens. One raven perched on his right shoulder, another perched by his side on a rocky outcrop, above a stream. The widow has a barrel by her side with a pitcher in front, and is holding twigs in her hands. A young boy stands on her left side, also holding twigs. Decorated all round. Title ''ELIJAH &'' ''WIDOW'' on an oval plaque to base front. Good. Elijah: Slight rubbing to base corners. Kiln effect: a few glaze pops to front of bocage and reverse of outcrop. Repair to a few bocage leaves - overall, 80 percent good and original. Repairs and overpainting to ravens. Two front table feet repaired. Repair inside the table base at front and side. Widow: Some rubbing to reverse of tree trunk. Kiln effects: shrinkage crack to top of her head and a few inside the base; shrinkage line to boy''s right ankle. Green interior with drainage hole and three stilt marks to interior at base. Stand in the form of a bowl with three scroll feet, each with a horned mask molded to the front. Impressed maker''s marks including the ''GJ'' monogram and painted pattern number ''3274'' in reserve to base of tureen. Good. Tureen: Slight flaking to basket exterior. Slight wear to rim.
