Mid to late 1800s lorgnette, folds to provide a quizzing glass, and folds open as a two-lens spectacle. Pretty handle with embossed-work ball decoration to centre. Large loop for suspension from a neck chain. Very elegant lorgnette in excellent condition with no wear. Closed, it measures 8.5 cm long, with the glass being 3.3.65 cm diameter. Open it is can be 9.5 cm wide at the spectacle part - or made smaller by folding in a little. Made in thick gold plate, as Americans call it, gold filled. Truly beautiful piece.   « Less

Handy sized bag, with shoulder strap and solid floor. Floor measures 25 cm by 12 cm, and the bag measures 35 cm high with side gussets of 11 cm wide. Very good condition, no damage. Early box containing five cut-throat razors with ivory handles and steel blades. Maker is W.Edwin, of Sheffield, England. Each razor has a day name etched to the side of the blade, so that you can read them in the box: Sunday, Monday etc. Two of the razors are missing, namely Tuesday and Thursday. Basically, the razors are in very good condition. All have some dark spots (not rust or pitting - just water stains) to the steel, but only one has a spot of rust on the blade - and even then, it is nowhere near the cutting edge of the blade. The box is original to them, being dark red Morocco, lined with black velvet. The box has a burn to the lid, and the hinges are missing. The catch is OK. Box measures 18 cm by 8 cm and 4.5 cm high. It is possible that this model is a teaching aid; it is likely that it was a Grand Tour model. While most Grand Tour models may represent an actual archaelogical site, this one is more likely to be an original composition representing an idealized form but is similar to the Tempietto of San Pietro by Bramante and the Florence cathedral Dome by Brunelleschi.Provenance: Private English collectionAdditional Information: The Grand Tour has long been a symbol of wealth and freedom. In the late 16th century, it became quite fashionable for young aristocrats to visit Italy and France as the finishing touch on their classical education. Travel was arduous and costly during this time and possible only for a privileged class and thus the Grand Tour lasted until the 19th century when railways across Europe allowed for easier travel. While these travels were very popular with the English, they were also undertaken by other Northern Europeans as well as Americans. The Grand Tour was developed out of the idea of traveling for the sake of curiosity and cultural development. These travels not only provided a cultural education but also allowed wealthier Grand Tourists an opportunity to purchase items unavailable at home, and it thus increased the travelers' social standing and prestige. Travelers would return with crates of books paintings sculpture and other cultural goods which would be displayed in libraries, gardens, and purpose-built galleries in their homes. A large number of artists such as Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Giovanni Antonio Canal (Canalletto) benefited from the patronage of the Grand Tour as travelers purchased souvenirs.
