The colors and image of this tile is very 1930''s 1940''s. The molded design is all hand glazed in fine detail and illegibly artist signed under the base of the branch of dogwood blossoms. The frame border has an intersting pearlized technique, where the glaze is pulled into little beads. Condition is excellent with a small shallow flake on the side at the back edge. A classical urn holding grape vines fills the front of this antique tile. Glazed in five colors, this piece staddles the Arts and Crafts and Art Deco periods in it''s design. It was installed at one time and has remnants of mortar on the back and sides, covering any manufacturing marks. However, this tile is pictured in an advertisement for Rookwood Pottery in Gustav Stickley''s The Craftsman magazine in February 1915. An image of this article can be seen in the book American Art Pottery by Sigafoose, page 192. The conditon is very good, there is a flake off the top right corner and smaller flakes on the top left and bottom left. A beautiful piece with excellent glazes. The soft glazes on this tile make it especially pleasing. Self bordered, it shows a bucolic Dutch scene of a canal with a ship and windmill. The tile measures 17'' x 11.5'', and was probably a centerpiece of a large stove. Many of these tiles have an unglazed ''foot'' making them about 3'' thick and unwieldy for display. This tile has this extra bit of clay removed. It is housed in a mahogany finished wood frame, ready to hang on a wall. An impressive and beautiful piece.
