pre-Victorian, circa 1830 Obadiah Sherratt Staffordshire Pearlware Bocage group with a Pastoral theme which features cows, one being bitten by a snake, stood on an oval base. The pieces have possibly been matched together at some stage. We think this because they have different colouration. Rainbow base version. Decorated in the round with decoration to the front and the reverse. Book reference,''Sherratt? A Natural Family of Staffordshire Figures'', by Malcolm & Judith Hodkinson, page 18, figure 19. Right facing: Fair. A few paint losses. Kiln effects: glaze run to the russet patch; a few specks of kiln soot caught in the glaze to the base. Remodelled bocage, three sections. Remodelled ear. Retouched flake to ground. Left facing: Generally good. Shallow chip lower base edge on side. Kiln effects: glaze pops to the cows back; glaze miss to the reverse; touch mark to the reverse. Pre-Victorian, circa 1820 Pair Staffordshire Pearlware lions, modeled on rectangular plinth bases with one front paw resting on a ball. Tails raised up over their backs. These are based on the antique marble lions which stand at the entrance of the Loggia dei Lanzi, a building in Florence, Italy. Decorated all round. Four vent holes underneath the base. Similar piece illustrated figure 53, page 196, ''English Earthenware Figures 1740-1840'' by Pat Halfpenny. Generally good. Right facing: Two teeth chipped. Some paint losses to brown enamel on the mane, belly, tail and around the base. Repair to interface where lion meets base. Repair to front right ankle. Restoration of tail and hind right leg. Two handles in the form of an elephant head holding a ring in its trunk. Brown footed base molded as an oriental, carved wooden stand. Turquoise interior. Green underside with central vent hole and further vent hole behind each foot. Impressed ''JH'' monogram. Generally good. Some wear to interior at base. Kiln effect: ''crackling'' of the ochre glaze on the handles and around some parts of the rim. Repaired crack down one side, across the underside and up onto the base on the other side (latter part still showing). Two restored chips to underside edge. Victorian, circa 1860 Pair Staffordshire cricketer figures, one modeled as a batsman, and the other as a bowler. The pair are matched, but go together very well. The crazing differs slightly. Both wearing floral shirts and orange caps, with the stumps on one side and their jackets draped on the other side. Old dull mercurial gilt line to bases, with decoration to shirts and jackets. Good creamy glaze. Vent hole to reverses. Similar pair illustrated figure 3302/3303, page 289, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. The batsman is thought to represent Julius Caesar, who played for Surrey for many years and also in the All England Eleven from 1849, with which he went to America and Australia. Batsman: Good. No hairlines. Minor paint losses to shirt. Gilt slightly rubbed. Kiln effects: over glazed manufacture chip to reverse of foot rim. Shrinkage crack to his right knee and below his belt on the right side of the figure. Repair to his neck. Bowler: Good. Minor flaking to middle finger of left hand, left sleeve, and front of base. Gilt slightly rubbed. Kiln effects: shrinkage crack between feet. Shrinkage line to both sides of neck and left shoulder, and between the stumps.
