Historical Context: This coin was minted by the THESSALIAN LEAGUE around 196 to 146 BC. Following the great victory of the Roman General Flamininus over Philip V of Macedon, in 197 BC. The freedom of the Greeks was proclaimed at Corinth and a number of new autonomous coinages were initiated. Those in the name of the Thassalian Leagua were probably minted at Larissa. The Thessalian league was a loose confederacy of feudal like states run by a few great Thessalian families. The seat of the Thessalian diet was Larissa.

Historical Context: These coins were minted in MARONEIA (Thrace) between 400-350 BC. This area was named after Maron, a priest of Apollo, who was featured in the Odyssey by Homer the Poet. Maroneia was noted for its fine quality wine. Thrace was a kingdom that was later founded by Lysimachos, 323-281 BC, who expanded its rule over much of Asia minor following the defeat of Antigonos the One-eyed. These coins predate that period.

Historical Context: This coin was minted in Syracuse during the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Campania was a Greek region on the western shore of Italy. Neapolis was originally a Rhodian colony named Parthenope. The city was recolonized by the Kymaians c. 600 BC. Its name changed to Neapolis c. 450 BC. It became allied with the Romans after 327 BC. These coins "Romano-Campanian" didrachms were deliberately intended to supplant the Greek didrachms in southern Italy. Some were actually produced by Greek mints acting under Roman direction.
