Glass has been prized by mankind for centuries. The qualities that delighted the ancients, the clarity, transparency, brilliance and malleability of glass, are the same ones that appeal to modern sensibilities. Early writers described glass in terms of wonderment: "Congealed of air, condensed of sunbeams, molded from the light of the open plain, or peeled from white pearl." The passage of centuries serves to make glass even lovelier than when it was new, for time graces its surface with a jewel-like iridescence. We today cannot help but marvel that something so delicately lovely has survived since Rome was at her height. In our pleasure at its beauty, we transcend the ages, and share our emotions with the citizens of a vanished world. - (GF.0223) « Less

In the ancient world, as today, lovely women enhanced their natural looks with cosmetics. These glass tubes, created at the height of the classical age, may once have contained two kinds of eye shadow, perhaps black kohl and bright green malachite. We can picture some noble woman drawing out the dark beauty of her eyes as she anticipated the arrival of her beloved. What dreams and passions did she carry with her on the journey though life? This delicate vessel, witness to the rituals of daily existence, connects us in an intimate way with the world of the past. As we hold it, our imagination crosses over the bridge of time and sets out on a wondrous journey of discovery. - (GF.0230) « Less

What might this lovely amphora have held when the Roman Empire was at its height? Fine oils to bathe the skin of a princess? A wine of rare and costly vintage? An attar made from a thousand crushed roses? Surely the vessel must have contained something as perfectly delicate as itself, something luxurious, pleasing to the senses. Alas! Time has caused the contents to vanish, but has consoled the vessel for its loss with a shimmering iridescence. Its appeal transcends the ages: as we delight in its beauty, we share our pleasure with those who beheld it long ago. - (GF.0241) « Less

Since its earliest invention, glass was popular for jewelry and ornament. Its translucent brilliance attracted the eye, while its rich colors imitated rarer and more costly gems. This lovely bracelet dates to the Roman period, when the art of ancient glassmaking was at its height. Its narrow size indicates it was worn by a child. Utterly simple, it nonetheless conveys the impression of timeless style and beauty. It is colored a gorgeous sapphire blue. We can imagine the person whose wrist it adorned long ago delighting in its charms as we still do today. - (GF.0253) « Less

Designed with elegant simplicity, this drinking cup was first used when the Roman Empire was at its height. What drink might it have contained and whose lips might it have refreshed in that vanished age? Perhaps it held Gallic wine downed by a thirsty centurion. A Judean lady might have sipped cool well water while gossiping with her friends. An actor might have cleansed his voice with juice between acts of a play. From an object like this, used in an everyday context, we can reconstruct an entire world in our imaginations. - (GF.0255) « Less

It was during the Roman period that the technique of glassblowing was first perfected, and translucent, jewel-like color was first added. This lovely vessel, the color of the sunlit Mediterranean, makes superb use of both innovations. What might it have contained when the Roman Empire was in its glory? Sweet oils? Fragrant attars? Precious balms? Surely the contents must have been something rare and costly to deserve so lovely a vessel. Today it seems filled with the elusive perfume of imagination. - (GF.0256) « Less

Though the Roman artisan created a vessel of utmost simplicity, the passage of time has added a glowing peacock patina to enhance its perfection. While we marvel at the fluid, graceful lines that no doubt pleased the ancient owner, we can also appreciate the radiant shimmer that is the gift of the centuries. It is one of the unique properties of glass that it gains beauty from the passage of time, while most everything else fades away. It is difficult to believe that the ancient craftsman did not deliberately intend for this vessel to achieve its present splendor in our time. It seems too exquisite to be a mere accident. - (GF.0258) « Less
