Antique Georgian sterling silver caster / pepperette, made London by William Bateman, 1820''s. Weighs 38 grams; 2 3/4 inches tall. According to Peter Waldron, in his book More »
Antique Georgian sterling silver caster / pepperette, made London by William Bateman, 1820''s. Weighs 38 grams; 2 3/4 inches tall. According to Peter Waldron, in his book on antique silver, the first quarter of the 19th century saw the size of casters decrease substantially and the egg-cup shape became more common. This would be a classic example - one could almost remove the lid and use the base for a soft-boiled egg. The caster stands on a round base. Subtle, understated decoration in the form of concentric rings. Narrow, small neck and then egg-cup shaped body. Fitted lid with perforated dome. Both base and lid are hallmarked: Base is marked on the rim: WB, lion passant; leopard, date letter k(1825) and monarch''s head ( George III). The lid is hallmarked WB; lion passant and date letter g(1822). Good condition with very minor ''ding'' mentioned for the sake of accuracy.
