Fostoria Crystal-Wisteria and Lafayette Wisteria Fostoria, founded in Fostoria, Ohio in 1887, is one of the best-known and loved American elegant glassmakers. For more than 100 years the company was a leader in the field of glassmaking. Today, there is no company producing glass that is as beautifully wrought as Fostoria’s was. Most of their patterns were hand finished, with hand-polished rims. Today it is simply not cost effective to have hand-finished glassware produced by a large company. Fostoria’s color palette has many interesting colors. Wisteria and Lafayette Wisteria are colors that are avidly sought by collectors; the colors are neodymium-based, and used by several elegant glass companies. Both greatly resembled the gemstone alexandrite; the patterns changes color based on the lighting, from deep pink to greenish to blue, though the color usually photographs fuschia pink. Neodymium compounds were first commercially used as glass dyes in 1927, and they remain a popular additive in glasses. Most of the world's neodymium is mined in China. Large and very heavy - a very good quality crystal bowl from Stuart of England, rings like a bell. Diagonal abstract noughts and crosses design. Design looks circa 1960s, although could be a lot earlier. It has a lot of age wear, so maybe as early as 1930s. Under the base has scuffs, indicating age and usage. Inside the bottom of the bowl are lots of scratches and wear. Probably used as a large-gathering salad bowl. Conical bowl measures 33 cm diameter at the top and 16 cm high. No chips or cracks. (Stuart Crystal, after being bought out by Wedgwood/Waterford in 1995, and closed 6 years later, so sadly is no longer with us).   « Less
