The V&A Collection London - mainly 18th century examples
This unusual device derives its name from the French for a night vigil. It was used to keep a drink or portion
of semi-liquid food warm at night-time, initially only at the bedside of infants or invalids, but from about 1800
for more general use. In the days before electric timers, it was the nearest thing to a combined 'teasmade'
and nightlight.
It consists of a hollow pedestal with pierced vents surmounted by either a covered food bowl or a small teapot.
The heat source is oil burned by means of a floating wick, located in a tiny bowl in the bottom of the pedestal.
Veilleuses were made in tin-glazed earthenware, creamware, stoneware, porcelain and bone china. They were
chiefly made between 1750 and about 1860.

For Sale is beautiful Umbrella Stand made by The Weller Pottery Company of Zanesville, Ohio. The pattern is called "Baldin" and the piece is simply gorgeous!. The Umbrella Stand is very large as it stands 21 1/2" tall and is 10 1/2" in diameter. The opening has a diameter of 9 1/4".
The Umbrellas Stand has a beautiful gloss Glaze with wonderful Blending of Green and Brown Earth tone colors. The Stand displays several very realistic looking Apples in an apple tree. The Apples are hanging from Branches and are Ripe, Plump and some are ready for picking. The leaves have very nice coloring in them as well and appear to be Macintosh Apples as they have areas of Red and Green. This pattern is repeated on the back side as well.
The Umbrella Stand is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. There is a couple of Glaze misses on the top rim. One area has more glaze missing than the other. This Umbrella Stand when flicked with your finger Rings like Fine Crystal. The piece is signed on the bottom with Weller Pottery's "Half Kiln Ink Stamp Mark".
This Weller Umbrella Stand in almost as nice as the day it was made. It is very clean and shows minimal signs of use. It has a Rare Flemish Glaze as you usually don't find these in this glaze. You find them in the standard matte earth tone glazes. The detail is sharp and crisp. I'm quite sure the Buyer will not be disappointed with their Purchase. This Vase will work in any Mission, Arts and Crafts or Country Decor. In Fact, I think it will work with most decors including primitives.
The Vase was produced during Weller's early Middle Period. This piece was made Circa, 1915-1920. « Less

Pretty china menu boards with ribbon decoration at top. The face of the board is slightly matt glaze, and you can write in pencil on this. One at each end of the dining table with the meal's menu on each. They each have a full British 19th century registration mark for 1875. Impressed maker's mark on rear, too faint to read, but possibly Mintons. Each board measures 13.5 cm high and about 10 cm wide. They have fixed easel legs to the rear. Excellent condition with just a few rubs to the paint colours. One has firing specks in the rear. Very unusual and quite rare to see them from the Victorian period. « Less
