This city was called THERMA in an earlier period but received its more famous name in 315 BC in honor of Kassander’s (Greek ruler) wife Thessalonika the daughter of PHILIP II and sister to ALEXANDER the GREAT. This was during the period known as the ROMAN REPUBLIC. After the fall of the monarchy, it became the capital of the second republic established by the Romans.
