Raffaello Romanelli (Italian, 1856-1928), Italian War Monument, bronze sculpture, 12 1/2". Inscribed "Romanelli Fanderia 6, Viguahi, Firenze".Romanelli was born in Florence Italy and studied with his father, Pasquale Romanelli (1812 - 1887), who had studied with the Bartolini. He continued his studies at the Florence Academy with Augusto Rivalta and Emilio Zocchi and he later taught at the Academy. Raffaello's son, Carlo Romanelli, was also a commercially successful sculptor. Raffaello created a number of large scale bronzes of note, including a monument to Carol I of Romania located at Pele Castle in Sinaia Romania, a Monument to Czar Alexander II in Russia, an equestrian Garibaldi Monument in Siena Italy, and a monument to John Wister in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. According to Sotheby's, in 1915 the "San Francisco Examiner" described Raffaello Romanelli as "to Italy what Rodin is to France". At the height of his career at the turn of the century, Raffaello had an international reputation and was regarded by many as "Italy's greatest living sculptor" (The Anglo-American Gazette, Nice, March 14, 1908) « Less

an Art Deco period solid bronze statue by the listed German sculptor Wilhelm Kumm (1861 - ?). This is for a German bronze figure of Gaius Mucius Scaevola. Was a noble youth, famous for his bravery. When the Etruscan king Lars Porsenna held Rome under siege, Gaius Mucius famously sneaked into the Etruscan camp and attempted to kill Porsenna, his plot failed. Mucius was captured. He famously declared to Porsenna: "I am Gaius Mucius, a citizen of Rome. I came here as an enemy to kill my enemy, and I am as ready to die as I am to kill. We Romans act bravely and, when adversity strikes, we suffer bravely." He also declared that he was one of three hundred other Romans willing to give their own life to kill Porsenna. Porsenna, fearful and angry, ordered Mucius to be cast into the flames. Mucius stoically accepted this punishment, preempting Porsenna by thrusting his hand into that same fire and giving no sign of pain. Impressed by the youth's courage, Porsenna freed Mucius. Because of his maimed right hand, Mucius was forever after known as Scaevola ("lefty" or "left-handed"). (Ab Urbe Condita, II.13) This bronze measures 20.5 inchs high overall. It has a beautiful original patina or color. It shows the handsome youth standing next to a brazier. The bronze is signed on the base "W KUMM ". This is for the artist William Kumm, born in Germany in 1861. He is famous for his bronzes of Classical historic and mythological men. The bronze is also stamped with the foundry "ATK-GES VOM H. GLADENBECK u Shon". The condition of the bronze is excellent throughout. The patination is beautiful and all original. The casting is the best as you can see in the photos. A very nice circa 1900 bronze. Footnote: The Gladenbeck foundry was founded by Carl Gustav Hermann Gladenbeck in 1851 and was run by various family members and shareholders until the early years of the 20th century. In 1857 the company relocated to Berlin, and in 1888 became Aktien-Gesellschaft H. Gladenbeck und Sohn; directed by Hermann Gladenbeck and sons Oskar and Alfred. nice bronze by Vincenzo Gemito (Napoli 1852 - 1929).56cm high.Vincenzo Gemito (Napoli 1852 - 1929).Vincenzo Gemito, (July 16, 1852 - March 1, 1929) was an Italian sculptor and artist who was considered both genius and insane, but whose works are highly prized by international galleries and collectors today. Although he worked in various studios of well known artists in his native Naples, Rome and Paris, he is considered to have largely been self-taught, the reason he produced such distinctive works for that time, replacing sentiment with outstanding realism. [edit] Biography Gemito was born in Naples to a poor woodcutter's family. The day after his birth, his mother left him on the steps of the dell'Annunziata orphanage and he was taken in to live with the other foundlings. He was given the surname Genito, but this somehow became Gemito in orphanage records. On July 30, 1852 he was adopted by a young family that had recently lost a child. The father was an artisan, and as a young child Gemito was probably encouraged to use his hands. He was working as an apprentice in painter and sculptor Emanuele Caggiano's studio before he was 10-years-old, demonstrating a dexterity and inventiveness which he eventually became famous for. He also worked in Stanislao Lista's studio. As a 12-year-old he was enrolled at the Naples Academy of Fine Art (where he became a lifelong friend of artist Antonio Mancini), and also attended the Domenico Maggiore Academy for night classes. He moulded the terracotta piece, The Player, (Il Giocatore), one of his most famous works, when only 16-years-old. It created excitement when exhibited at the Promotrice in Naples, so much so that King Victor Emmanuel II purchased it and presented it to the Museo di Capodimonte for permanent display. Gemito moved to Paris in 1877 where he found a great friend in noted French artist Jean-Louis Meissonier. As he was creating new works in various mediums in Paris, he also exhibited his works in noted salons and galleries, and at the Universal Exposition of 1878. It was at the Paris Salon the previous year where he experienced a singular triumph, with the showing of his Neapolitan Fisherboy, which he had worked on for some years to perfect. The acclaim surrounding that work alone brought him widespread fame, and lucrative commissions for portraits. He remained in Paris three years before returning to Naples (1880) after his partner died. He went to Capri for a short time, where he married Anna Cutolo. In 1883 he once again demonstrated his determination to work outside the norm when he constructed his own foundry on the via Mergellina in Naples. He did so to revive the lost-wax process for bronze casting, which had been used during the Renaissance. In 1887, Gemito was commissioned to create a marble statue of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V, to be erected outside the Royal Palace. Marble was the least liked medium for Gemito, and he fretted that this work was below his capabilities. He suffered a mental breakdown and withdrew to a one-room apartment, and spent periods in a mental hospital. For the next 21 years he worked on drawing but remained a recluse, and it wasn't until 1909 that he resumed sculpting to once again produce masterful works. In his later years, Gemito turned to gold and silver smithing, and his intricate and delicate works are much admired today. In 1952, a postage stamp was issued in Italy to celebrate the 100 years since Gemito's birth. « Less
