Antique sterling silver tea and coffee set. Made by Gorham and Company circa 1883. The set combines high Victorian with Aesthetic style. It consists of the following 4 pieces: Coffee or hot water pot: 6 1/4 inches high; approx 9 1/2 inches from tip of spout to edge of handle; weighs 782 grams. Teapot: approx 5 3/4 inches high; approx 9 inches tip to tip accross; weighs 652 grams. Sugar bowl: approx 5 1/4 inches high; slightly under 7 1/2 inches accross from edge to edge of handles; weighs 465 grams. Milk jug: 3 1/4 inches to top of handle; 6 1/4 inches from edge of handle to tip of spout; 279 grams. Magnificent repousse floral patterns with a ring of foliage, like a skirt towards the neck. A variety of beautiful flowers, beaten into the silver from behind in superb quality workmanship. 3-d in parts and exquisitely sensitive, with a finely textured ground. The rims and spouts are heavilly influenced by the Aesthetic movement with beaded bands and Aesthetic style design on the spout of teapot and water/coffee jug. Repousse flowers on the handles. Handles also have a shield-shaped reserve. Hinged lids on tea and coffee pots and removable lid on sugar. Tea and coffee have original heat insulators. Beautiful, bud shaped finials. The set is true museum quality. Each piece is fully hallmarked underneath with Gorham marks, STERLING, letter P, which was used by the factory to denote the year 1883 and 1661, on every piece, which indicates that they began life as a set (and were not assembled). Condition is very, very good. I found no damage/restoration of any sort on any of the pieces. The previous owner applied little felt dots under the pieces to prevent them from scratching a table and to protect the bottom of the silver.
