Niello Sterling Silver Locket Circa. 1900 Russian. Made in Russia for the French market. Has both Russian and French hallmarks. Black and silver checkerboard design on both sides. Slides open to reveal space for two photos. Original plastic inserts to cover photos of your choice. Locket measures 2 1/4 inches high with bale and 1 3/4 inches wide. Niello is an inlay process using black and silver. Involves engraving a significant area in a metal plate and then filling the indented portions with a powered black matte made from sulphides. Locket has hand chased designs on both front and back sides. Front side has a yellow gold stork with yellow and rose gold butterfies. Back side has leaves and flowers, all in sterling silver.
