Created in the famed Berlin workshop of Gerhard Dagly, this elegant set of boxes and their coffer in "vernis martin" bears a graceful chinoiserie moonlight scenes of quaint buildings, rocks and plants, with Chinese-style diaper patterns on the sides and a delightful "yin-yang" brass closure. The "moon" on the front of the coffer is a disk of mother-of-pearl. A truly superb item for a sophisticated collector! Coffer is approximately eight inches by 6-1/2 inches by two inches high; boxes are around 3-1/2 inches by 2-3/4 inches by 1-3/8 inches. German, end of the Seventeenth Century. « Less

The bespectacled character protrayed on this antiques nutcracker could possibly be an old woman, but I choose to think that it Guisseppe, the widower who fashioned his "son" Pinocchio to ease his loneliness. Whichever and whatever, the carving is full of character. Tyrolean or Swiss, late Nineteenth Century, it is in fine condition, with only minor wear and no repairs, and is about eight inches in length and 1-3/4 inches wide and three inches deep. « Less

Of an unusual small size, probably for travel, is this antique Chinese seal chest. All four sides and the top are carved with recessed central rectangular cartouches, and one side slides up to reveal three drawers to hold the collection of document seals and ink pot. The wood is lustrous East Indian rosewood (Pterocarpus indicus) stained to resemble zitan. A brass bale handle at the top serves for carrying the chest and each drawer has a small brass knob. Early Nineteenth Century, approximately four inches square and 4-1/2 inches tall, exclusive of the handle. Each drawer is 2-5/8 inches by 2-1/4 inches. The top and bottom drawers are 11/16 inches deep, while the middle one is one inch deep. « Less

A sturdy little coffer for storing and heating betel nuts and the lime necessary for chewing them, this fine brass work, approximately 5-1/4 inches by 2-1/2 inches by two inches high, is nicely punched and engraved with designs of trailing foliage and geometric patterns. Raised framing has been filed to suggest rope-work.. It is easy to see how this form influenced the design of early Dutch tobacco boxes. The two metal inside dividers are missing, but the piece retains its push button lock. Superb condition, late Eighteenth or early Nineteenth Century. « Less

The base and candle cup are almost identical to Figure C on page 205 of THE BRASS BOOK by Peter, Nancy and Herbert Schiffer (1978, Schiffer Publishing Ltd.), but the shell-decorated handle is pierced and counterbalanced with a finger hold underneath.
