American Aesthetic Movement Mirrored Chest of Drawers in a Moorish Taste. Circa 1885. This superb example of high end 19th century furniture is from the same estate as the signed Herter Bros. chest we sold earlier. Fresh to the market, this unique chest, has features that we have never seen before. This low boy has two surmounted flanking cabinets with beveled glass front and outer side, mirrored back and open inner side. The top of each cabinet has an open work brass gallery. The top of the mirror frame is an unusual marquetry, which looks to me like stylized clouds and stars. The chest is original finish solid mahogany with satin wood interiors. The chest has large, very ornate brass hardware in a Moorish Taste. The low boy has three long drawers and a secret, spring loaded drawer beneath the top. This piece embodies the principles of Charles Eastlake and other influential designers of the time with simple, incised, turned and low relief decoration. Everything is original to this chest, finish hardware and mirrors. The care with which set was constructed suggests that it is from a leading New York cabinet maker's shop and after consulting with other dealers of quality 19th c American furniture, we believe this piece can be strongly attributed to the top notch cabinet makers, Pottier & Stymus. Original finish, very minor repairs, hairline crack to one small mirror, lightly cleaned and waxed. Original locks marked G. Bayer pat. Feb 6, 1873. Charming, English Victorian Aesthetic Movement folding screen. This lovely, three panel screen features a handsome natural bamboo frame set with hand painted floral panels. Each panel is painted with different flowers. All three panels are painted with the same colors, red and white blooms with green foliage. Skillfully painted on frosted ribbed glass. All original, with brass folding hinges and fancy cast brass caps on the top end of each post. Minor loss to the painted panels mainly on the "morning glory" panel. Re-glued and polished, as sturdy and usable as it is handsome. 30 1/2" tall x 37" overall, each panel is 12" wide.   « Less

Antique hand-painted folding dressing screen. This large and impressive four panel dressing screen, depicts a dynamic scene of a storm wracked sea with two shore lines visible, one a distant coast with a castle and the other a near sandy shore with fisherman unloading their catch. On the water between these two shores are several sail boats and what appears to be the wreck of a small boat. Each panel of this screen is slightly curved, on both top and bottom and outer sides, something I have not seen before. The back is painted an off white. The screen is quite heavy and probably has a solid wood core. Very good, all original, "as found" condition with only very minor chips in the paint and some wear to the edges. Very decorative, sturdy and useful in the best tradition of 19th century painted screens. Unsigned. 64" wide x 72" tall overall, each panel is 16" wide x 72" tall and 7/8" thick.   « Less

Mid 19th Century. Very fine pair of Gothic influenced American Rococo parlor/hall chairs. Elegant tall pierce carved backs in a solid black walnut with a graceful foliate design, flanked by flowing spiral turned posts with ball topped finials. The wooden seat platform is decorated on the front and sides with dentil molding in a Gothic Taste. The front legs are a flowing spiral with a turned bottom and original brass casters. The rear legs are simple and curve back slightly. Cleaned and re-polished. Re-upholstered several years ago in a fined striped silk which has some slight staining but otherwise excellent condition. 42" tall x 19"wide x 21" deep with a seat height of 17"   « Less

Jacobean Revival style English cabinet in oak, walnut and exotic inlays. Extravagantly carved with flowers, animals and mythical beasts on virtually every surface. Two doors and three drawers all skillfully inlaid with flowers and leaves. Original beveled glass mirror, set in between the upper doors and lower drawers. The interior is all fancy quarter-sawn oak. The hardware is simple brass pulls. Extra good "as found" condition, with no repaired or replaced wood except for a narrow strip on the back used to fill a shrinkage crack (see photo). Stamped on the top drawer by the well known English cabinet maker Edwards & Roberts (more information below). 74" tall x 34" wide x 17 1/2" deep. Price 5,600.Edwards & Roberts The firm Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Their business also involved retailing, adapting and restoring the finest antique furniture and there are many examples of their earlier furniture with later embellishments bearing their stamp.
