Moghul jewelry is exceedingly rare, having been "recycled" for its pure gold and fine gemstones during centuries of war and political upheaval. This exquisite example of Persian artistry has a central floral motif set with diamonds on a pavee of rubies. Each of the eight points of its star are set with diamond., sapphires, an emerald, a carnelian, a topaz and a pearl. The finely detailed back features a champlevee design of a bird and floral motifs. France, circa 1900-1930's. This lovely little 18 karat gold pendant opens to reveal a functioning mechanical pencil. The cap pulls off easily to allow you to pull the end which extends the pencil: turning the end to advance and pull back the pen. There is a tiny crack beginning on the cap, barely discernible with the naked eye, but visible under magnification. There are also some tiny dents, appropriate to age and not very visible. Dimensions: 2.25 inches long, including the bail (closed) by 1/4 inch in diameter. When full extended it measures 3.5 inches in length.
