Grave Cover - DC.5820, Origin: Saudi Arabia, Circa: 18 th Century AD, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Cover Of The Grave Of The Prophet, The Masjid al-Nabawi (Mosque of the Prophet) in Medina is, as the final resting place of Muhammad, the second holiest mosque in Islam. The interior walls of the Shrine of the Prophet Muhammad (rawda) within the mosque were historically covered in textiles similar to those of the Ka’ba in Mecca. However, unlike the Meccan Kiswa, they were changed considerably less frequently than once a year and were often made in Ottoman Turkey rather than Egypt. « Less

Colour Sitara of Kaaba - DC.5821, Origin: Egypt, Circa: 1767 AD to 1768 AD, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Ottoman, Medium: Textile, Condition: Very Fine, This magnificent work is an external curtain made to cover the door of the Kaaba (Burqa), one of Islam’s holiest sites. It was commissioned in 1181 Hijrah by Sultan Selim III (1761-1808) known for his reforms of the state system as well as for his love of music, poetry, and the arts. It was the custom for whoever ruled Egypt to create over a period of one year a beautiful curtain for the door of the Kaaba in Mecca. Using gold and silver thread, the artisans quoted certain passages from the Qur’an. Each Sitara carried the monogram of the ruler who commissioned such an extraordinary work. « Less

Circa 1890. "Stevengraph" silk picture, made by Anderson Bros of Patterson N.J. This charming scene is titled "Betsy Ross Making the First United States Flag". Silk pictures of this type, where originally made in England starting in 1879, by the Stevengraph company. They rapidly became very popular and were made in both England and the United States and are generically referred to as "Stevengraphs" by collectors. This particular, American made silk picture is in exceptional original condition and has probably spent it's entire existence in a frame. The present frame is vintage, gilded wood, that works well with the picture. 13 1/2" wide x 11 1/2" tall, over-all.. « Less
