The pair of tall courtesans are here portrayed standing with hands crossed on the front, the abundant white long vest covering the pink gown underneath, the shoulders with an ochre blouse topped by a pink shawl surrounding the upper arms. The up-turned curved shoes just visible underneath. The vest still retains the original floral patterns that would have once embellish the entire figure. Both ladies wear their hair swept up in a large chignon that would have in real life been kept in shape by hidden superstructures in a style common during the high Tang period in the 8th century CE. Their moon-shaped faces are blushed, with large full cheeks, small vermilion lips and a decorative roundel placed on the front. This Tang beauty ideal was indeed eulogised by the famous contemporary poet Fang Gan (d. 888 C.E) who immortalised it in verses by writing:
“ the highs and lows of those vermilion lips imitate cherries, half covered breasts are snow on a sunny dayâ€. « Less

In the eighth century B.C., Greek settlers left their homeland behind and established a string of colonies along the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy. After the rise of Rome More »
In the eighth century B.C., Greek settlers left their homeland behind and established a string of colonies along the Adriatic coast of Southern Italy. After the rise of Rome centuries later, this region would become known by the Latin term Magna Graecia, literally “Greater Greece,†due to the dense concentration of Greek settlements. The Greeks flourished here alongside the native populations, amassing great wealth through trade and importing their Hellenic culture throughout the area. They in turn were influenced by their neighbors, so that Magna Graecian pottery developed into a unique style that reflected both Greek and native Italian traditions. The Daunians were one such native culture that lived alongside the Greek colonies. Daunian pottery can be characterized by its rounded forms, geometric, linear designs, and eathern tones. The Greeks adopted some of the Daunian forms for themselves, revealing the cultural interplay that so distinguishes the art of Magna Graecia, both in respects to the Greeks as well as the native peoples such as the Daunians.Having a graceful, double barrel-shape linked by an arched handle, this charming pot is covered with delicate patterns largely taken from nature, in which we can still see the flowing brush of the ancient artisan. Waves encircle the shoulder, plant fronds cover the handle, and a leaping dolphin appears in one of the lower panels. The double body would suggest a ceremonial or ritual function. This is a rare and lovely vessel that seems very much a reflection of the natural surroundings of Magna Graecia. - (PF.0023)

African red slip ware lamp decorated on the sunken discus with an angel, the shoulders patterned with swirls and dots, a plain knob handle in the back of the discus. This type of lamp originated in Northern Africa and is closely related to the production of African terra sigillata ware. Yet their exact origin is unknown, while some suggest Tunisia, others have indicated either Egypt or Cyrenaica.Reference: N. Adler, Oil Lamps of the Holy Land, Israel, 2004:p. 158 - (LO.1168) « Less

Large Pottery Jug with Incised Decoration - LO.540, Origin: Afghanistan, Circa: 9 th Century AD to 11 th Century AD, Dimensions: 10" (25.4cm) high, Collection: Asian, Style: More »
Large Pottery Jug with Incised Decoration - LO.540, Origin: Afghanistan, Circa: 9 th Century AD to 11 th Century AD, Dimensions: 10" (25.4cm) high, Collection: Asian, Style: Early Islamic, Medium: Buff Earthenware. Large jug with piriform body, long neck and irregular flared mouth, the long strapped handle twisted, placed just below the rim and bent downward onto the belly. The decoration covers the upper part of the belly and includes several concentric bands with vertical lines in relief and a band of triangles and small circlets. Since the edges of the designs are quite sharp and the reliefs rather high, one can safely assume that this jug was carved rather than moulded, thus indicating a date between the 9th and the 11th centuries AD. « Less
