Created during the era of the Kings David and Solomon, this simple yet charming vessel exudes an energy of the ages, glowing from within its surface, richly patinated by the fingerprints of history. Such a vessel would have been a necessity in the ancient world to contain and transport precious oils and unguents. Our imagination is stimulated as we try to picture whose hands might have held this vessel almost three millennia ago. It is plausible that such a jug was used by Samuel to symbolically anoint Saul as the King of Israel. Whatever the secrets of its past, we are aware that it was crafted by ancient hands, held and used by people who lived in a time of religious and political revolution. Although its original contents have long disappeared, the energy of those vanished lives is still contained within this vessel. This jug was once a vital, indispensable part of everyday life in the ancient world. Today, it is even more valuable to our modern lives, not as a container, but as a symbol of the past. This jug holds history inside, it reminds us of the lives, the joys and struggles, the triumphs and defeats, of those who came before us. - (PF.5869A) « Less

Created in the age of David and Solomon, this simple but charming vessel glows with the rich patina of history. Who can say through whose hands it might have passed centuries ago? It was perhaps from such a jug that Samuel anointed Saul king of Israel. Whatever its past, we are aware that it was crafted by ancient hands, held and used by people who lived in a time and place much different from our own. The energy of those vanished lives clings to it still and sets our imaginations stirring. - (CK.0040) « Less

The love of ornament is as old as civilization itself. By wearing jewelry that is unusual or unique, we define ourselves as individuals and set ourselves apart from the crowd. Throughout antiquity, in every great culture, beads were formed from colored gems, glass, ceramic, shell, bone and metal in an endless variety of shapes and sizes. Sometimes they were worn for their magical or curative powers, at other times simply for their beauty. They were worn by people, highborn and low, the citizen of Egypt, Mesopotamia, Judea, Greece, Rome and Byzantium. Frequently these jewels, so prized in life, were buried with their owners to adorn them through eternity. When we wear them today, we add another chapter to their long and fascinating history. - (SB.0741) « Less

For the lover of antiquities, the term bronze carries a number of meanings. In the 19th century a Danish museum employee decided to organize the museum's collection by dividing the artifacts into time periods based on man's changing tool types. Thus, the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age have come to represent three distinct time periods in man's technological and cultural history. When man discovered that by alloying tin with copper he could create a material substance much stronger than copper, the resulting bronze technology changed many aspects of his culture. One monumental change was in the weaponry, fine examples represented here in this splendid dagger, powerful axe head and arrowheads. Expert craftsmanship combine with an aesthetic eye to create weapons that are lifted into the realm of art. Their dynamic power and spirited essence can be seen and felt through their exquisite design and tactile surfaces. These sculptural weapons touch a chord deeply buried but never forgotten, common to all mankind. - (FZ.290)
