In the ancient world, even the most common household objects were imbued with a graceful beauty. This splendid little spouted vase was most likely used to fill lamps with oil. As we grip its handle and tip it gently today, we are echoing the gestures of those who first held it centuries ago. Like those forgotten individuals, we are charmed by its simple grace, by its elegant blending of form and function. Across the barriers of time, we share an emotion and make contact with a vanished world. - (PF.2146) « Less

This bichrome cup may be described as a sessile kantharos, having a low foot with two vertical handles that do not rise above the level of the lip. The wide body, to which the handles are attached in the middle, meets a vertical slope flaring outwards to form a fairly wide mouth. A blending of red and black slip presents an attractive variation of shading. The buff of the interior and stem provide a striking contrast to the coloration, especially as the darker shades flow over the rim into the interior. To hold this cup takes one back to the time of Greek colonization of the southern portion of ancient Italy (called in antiquity Magna Grecia). - (PF.5380) « Less

Eight roughly drawn black bands of varying widths encircle the body of this vessel. A vertical open handle connects from the everted lip to the middle of the body, and is decorated with two large vertical bands on the outside. An interesting pattern is on the inside of the handle with a series of triangles of diminishing size in the center of squares surrounded by a black background. Though simple in ornamentation this vessel has a distinctive charm and gives us a good idea of domestic ceramic ware in ancient Southern Italy (known as Magna Grecia in antiquity). - (PF.5382) « Less

A wide rim provides substantial depth in this cup. The perfectly modeled body has a very thin ridge at the lip and vertical sides sloping dramatically to a small stemless base. Striations lines from the spinning of the wheel can be seen on the interior, against the beautiful red color of the clay, which adds dimension and richness. This cup was most likely made for local use, since exportation of ceramics from Magna Grecia (the pre-Roman name for the Greek colonies located in southern Italy) was limited. Therefore, it presents a good example of domestic pottery used by those who could afford the finer ware from the better workshops of the region. - (PF.5383) « Less

This vessel is similar to a type of pottery called a stemless cup, having two horizontal handles and a low stemless foot. Three perfectly uniform red bands decorate the interior, radiating inwards in diminishing sizes. The lip, which extends in a ridge slightly beyond the sides, is painted in red. Two thick red lines encircle the body just below the handles, while two other lines are around the base. The Greek colonists who settled in Magna Graecia (the pre-Roman name for southern Italy) broke away from traditions of Classical Greece to create their own style of ceramics. Certain wares, such as this example, are characterized by minimal decoration precisely applied on a buff background to form an elegantly simple bowl. - (PF.5385) « Less

The underside of this dish is comprised of a circle, formed by a thick black band, within which are intersecting lines. Around the edge is a series of short vertical black lines or slashes between which is a pattern of two pairs of three lines at right angles. A solid triangle is at center having two short vertical lines topped by horizontal slashes. This unique design is echoed along the middle of the inside of the everted lip, bordered by two black lines. The designs on this phiale add an element of mystery to its basically simple form. - (PF.5386) « Less

Red concentric circles encompass the face of this dish. The red bands that embellish this fine example of classical pottery vary in thickness. The pedestal that supports the shallow dish is also bound by two red bands, exhibiting the simple decorative style consistent throughout the entire composition. The silhouette of this dish represents the elegant proportions of Southern Italian pottery. This fine ceramic ware suggests by its refined nature it belonged to an upper class household, perhaps used to burn incense within its shallow bowl. - (PF.5387) « Less

The body of this vessel is broad and somewhat flat, resting on a slim, ridged base. A thick handle stretches from the back to the neck of the spout. In the middle of the body is a raised concave “button,†perhaps as a decoration. The spout flares out from the base to form the wide mouth, which is painted black on the outside and inside. Potters from the Greek colonies of southern Italy (called in antiquity Magna Graecia) often deviated from the standard styles of mainland Greece. Vessels in unusual shapes were made to accommodate local demand, since most of the ceramics were not exported, and this charming example may have been used for holding oil to refill lamps. - (PF.5427) « Less

Similar to an olpe in style, this jug has a flared, broad mouth with a vertical handle attached to the lip and the spherical body. The dark slip of the handle spills over onto the inner lip, while the body is red just beyond the center before turning to buff. A bulbous middle narrows quickly to the low foot. Though simple in form, this vessel is nicely balanced and pleasing to the eye. It may have been used for individual portions of wine scooped from a larger storage jar. Pottery of Southern Italy, known in antiquity as Magna Grecia, is "warmer" in appearance than those from Greece, with its fine coloration blending soft shades of red and cream. - (PF.5426) « Less

This charming olpe has a wide upper portion, with the sides sloping sharply to the slightly flared base. A short, straight-backed handle is attached close to the neck and on the everted lip. Red slip covers most of the vessel, while the lower portion is in cream or buff. Though simple in design, the fine proportions attests to the stein achieved by Greek potters working in Southern Italy. The olpe, such as this one, was used for pouring wine after having first been taken from a larger storage vessel (amphora). - (PF.5428) « Less
