Superb antique nude female bronze sculpture with a plaque inscribed Phryne Devant Ses Juges Par Campagne (Sculptr). The base of the bronze is inscribed Campagne with a foundry seal reading F. P. SANSON SUCC-HAMBURG 4 NEUERWALL. This is Phryne Before the Judges, a superb sculpture by Pierre Etienne Daniel Campagne born 1851. Phryne Before the Judges is his most famous and sought after bronze sculpture. Her face is exquisite matching her beautiful composition . This bronze is pictured on page 1,075 illustration number 4285 in Berman's Bronzes Sculptors and Founders Volume 4. Berman dates the piece circa 1895, I agree. This beautiful bronze measures 18-1/2 inches tall, at its widest width 7-1/2 inches, depth 5-1/4 inches. Other than a little bruise on the upper portion of her left hip, and some minor rubbing to the patina the bronze is in very good to excellent condition. The lady is beautiful as she stares fearlessly at the large snake that opens its mouth and looks right at her as she holds it. The entire sculpture shows great detail, quality, and composition. She is mounted on the original green marble specimen base. She measures 15 inches high on the base. The base alone measures almost 4 inches. Beautiful antique bronze orientalist snake charmer inscribed Emile Laporte. Emile Laporte was born in Paris on November 18, 1858 and died there in 1907. He studied with Dumont and Thomas and exhibited at the Salon de Artistes Francais from 1883 winning medals, a traveling scholarship, another medal in 1897, and a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. He is a well listed French sculptor from the 19th century. The sculpture depicts an orientalist woman wearing a necklace and holding a snake in her hand while the body of the snake is wrapped around her arm. It is signed indistinctly on the back, and has numbers and foundry initials incised along the side. This is a nice composition, a very peaceful and calm subject. The girl is walking forward carrying the jug. She has a very sweet face and is very well sculptured. She measures 10-1/2 inches high, width at base 4-1/4 inches, depth of base 3-3/4 inches. Superb antique bronze sculpture with a lady in a classical robe opening her jewelry box and making selections. This is one of the finest and highest quality bronzes I have ever had the pleasure to see and own. The quality of this sculpture is photographic, she actually looks alive as she carefully examines her jewelry. The bronze is inscribed Trodoux. Henri Emile Adrian Bidhauer Trodoux was a sculptor born in St. Petersburg Russia of French decent in the 19th century. This information is found on page 14 of Thime Becker, Volume XXXIII, published in 1939 Allegemeinex Lexikon der Bildenden Kunstler. This artist is also listed on page 383 of E. Benezit's Dictionary of Painters Sculptors and Engravers. Trodoux attended The School of Beaux-Arts in St. Petersburg Russia and won awards at an Exposition in 1874 and 1876. Most of this artist's works were compositions of animals and birds. We searched the auction records for the passed 30 years and could not find another example of this sculpture sold. Needless to say this is a very rare sculpture and composition of a beautiful lady with her jewelry. Bronzes like this appear once in a lifetime. This sculpture will not only appeal to sculpture collectors but will also appeal to anyone collecting Russian art and jewelry dealers. This is an extremely rare bronze the first I have ever seen. Weight 11.25 lbs. Height 14-1/2 inches. The base measures 8-1/2 inches wide by 5 inches deep by 1 inch high.
