"Misty Morning, Gloucester Harbor" by Emile Albert Gruppe (American, 1896-1978). Oil on canvas, 30 x 36 inches. Signed lower right: Emile A. Gruppe. Condition: excellent, all original, with no restoration or in-painting. Provenance: private collection, Toronto, Canada. Emile Gruppe was a prolific artist who is best known for his impressionistic landscape paintings, and most especially for his harbor views of Gloucester and Rockport, Massachusetts. The son of the painter Charles Gruppe (1860-1940), Emile was born in Rochester, NY on Nov. 23, 1896. Much of his childhood was spent on the coast of Holland; however, at the outbreak of World War I, his family returned to the U.S., and Emile began his formal artistic training, attending the Art Students League in New York, studying under Charles Chapman and George Bridgman. He also trained with the landscape painter George Carlson in Woodstock, NY, and with Richard Miller in Paris and Charles Hawthorne in Provincetown, MA. Emile was to develop a lasting friendship with Carlson, by whom he was greatly influenced. Emile became enamored with the fishing port of Gloucester during the mid 1920s, and thereafter spent many summers in Gloucester, eventually founding an art school in 1942, the Gruppe Summer School, in partnership with his artist contemporaries Bridgman, Carlson, Miller and Chapman. This he operated until 1970. Gruppe's style is characterized by robust brushwork, with a depth of color in his palette, and a concentration on compositional design. He became a prolific painter, creating about two hundred oils each year. Emile maintained a home in Jeffersonville, Vermont, where he painted the countryside surrounding Mount Mansfield. During his later years, he spent his winters in Sarasota, Florida, while continuing with his painting and teaching. He died in East Gloucester in 1978. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the North Shore Art Association, and the Rockport Art Association. His works are in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown, MD; The Hickory Museum of Fine Art, Hickory, NC; Ringling Museum, Sarasota, FL and others. « Less

Small Folio Print (Conningham 1240)
Published by N. Currier, 25 Spruce Street, New York, between 1838-1856, this print, “The Constitution and the Guerriere… ,†is a lithograph on paper with hand coloring. The print is listed by Conningham as number 1240. The image size is 8 ¼†x 12 ½†(small folio) and it is matted in a vintage black and gold molded frame.
It illustrates the end of the action between the frigate Constitution and the HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812.
“After 30 minutes of battle against ‘Old Ironsides,’ the Guerriere’s hull was much damaged and she was completely unrigged. Upon which she struck her colors, her crew was removed, and she was blown up and sunk. This battle did much to enhance American unity during the War of 1812 where seamen’s rights were a major concernâ€
This truly beautiful print is from our father's estate collection and it would be an outstanding addition to yours.
