Circa 2009 18" high by 24" wide unframed 24 1/2" high by 30" wide framed This painting is an homage to California Plein Air painter John Gamble who had an early influence on Dudley''s paintings. This painting is oil on canvas framed in a gold leaf arts and crafts frame. James Dudley Slay III was born on October 2, 1953 in Jackson, Mississippi. Slay began his formal instruction at the New England School of Design. He briefly attended the Otis Art Institute in Pasadena, California. He followed this with personal tutoring from Russian impressionist Sergei Bongart. He also studied with Karl Dempwolf and Frank Serrano at the California Art Club. His specialty is painting in the plein air tradition and in his studio. His works can be found in private collections nationwide and in permanent display at the American Museum of Art in Petropavlovsk, Kamechatka Russia. He has exhibited in juried art shows across the state. Slay is listed in ART.com and the Artist''s Bluebook.   « Less

Circa 1950 23" high by 31" wide unframed 30" high by 37" wide framed This is a pallet knife painting of a san swept landscape similar to Carmel, California. It is in murky shades of a moggy morning featuring twisted cypress trees. The painting is signed lower right by European listed artist H. Hiersch 1918-1986. There is evidence of craquelure but it does not detract from the stark beauty of the painting. The frame is ornate antique white with brushed highlights of gold.   « Less

6" by 8" unframed framed 8" by 10" The artist was born in Buffalo, New York 4/24/1885. He died 10/15/1955 in Los Angeles, California. Herbert Sartelle had a colorful career having run away to the Barnam & Bailey Circus as a stage hand, set painter and magician. In 1909 he worked with Rogers and Hammerstein in New York and worked the RKO circuit. After leaving show business in the late 1920''s until his death he traveled the California state painting desert scenes and seascapes. He was a highly skilled artist who was able to capture the lupines and poppies of the purple mountains and desert plus the Monterey Peninsula. He retired in Palm Springs . His paintings appear in several books and museums. References are Askart.com, Artist''s in California 1780-1940 by Milton, Hughes. This is a lovely desert landscape, that Sartelle was best known for. It shows purple scrub brush of a flourishing landscape. The appears to have some dirt and would benefit from a cleaning.
