Early American oil painting on board. Portrait of an early Colonial woman. Painting measures 8 1/2inches wide and 10 1/2inches long. Comes in ornate Rococco style frame, possibly original, measures 14 1/2 X 16 1/2inches.Sitter wearing dark dress. Good quality fabric and expensive pleats with little ruffled lacy collar and pink ribbon around her neck contrast beautifully with the austerity of the dress. The soft pink and white are beautifully echoed in her complexion. Wide penetrating eyes and soft silky hair, wonderfully depicted with tremendous sensitivity. No visible signature, but artist of great quality and proficiency. Condition is very good. Frame richly adorned with raised flowers, scrolls and shells in undulating, lobed raised form. She is from the Middle East / Oriental country - maybe an Arab lady or a Bedouin or even a Jewess from one of the North African / Middle Eastern countries. While the gentleman reposes in a thronelike chair, two ladies entertain him, one pouring wine from a decanter. A castle is lightly depicted in the background. Very pretty depiction of plants and foliage and very fine detail of faces, clothes and hair. Watercolour brushstrokes are quite clear. There appear to be 3 initials amidst the foliage: TAG. Still in their gowns before going off to catch the early bird special. The wallpaper utilised a technique of varied stencils that is repeated decoratively on the lower left below the furry carpet. Presently has beautiful gilt frame, however due to shipping danger of glass breaking and tearing the litho, we are selling it without the frame. Height 35'' 25''wide. This is an unusual work by the artist. Done near the end of his life, it is less abstract than many of his other works and is a portrait of his wife. It is extremely sensitively done and he has bestowed upon her many riches.
