Authentic antique, Chinese,19th century, Qing Dynasty, cast - brass and chased in relief Incense Burner, (Censer), and cover. The body of globular form, decorated with hand carved in low relief various animals, supported on three cabriole legs surmounted by beast – heads, fitted with a pair of handles in the form of Qulin. The domed cover carved with animals and pierced with holes, and topped with a dragon form finial. SOLD Antique 18th-19th century Chinese Qing Dynasty hand carved Huanghuali wood Table Screen. The rectangular frame is enclosing a carved panel. Both sides of openwork and intricate relief are archaically carved and scrolled with stylized elephant and dragon design. Adorned on one side is an elaborate central medallion containing a carving in relief of a horned Chilong dragon with an interlinked body bordered by traditional Chinese Fret pattern. The medallion on the other side is containing a carving in relief of a vase with flowers. The whole panel is raised on solid shoe feet and flanked by shaped standing spandrels. DIMENSIONS: Approximately: Height: 76 cm (29.92 in).Width: 53 cm (20 7/8 in).Weight: 8.16 Kg (18 pounds). CONDITION: Some age, cracks, and chips in the wood. Standing spandrels have cracks and chips because of recent improper fastening by nails. A table screen was used on a desk top for good Feng-Sui to ward off the evil Qi. It also served the purpose to separate and create a sense of intimacy for the working area from its surrounding area as often a desk or a scholar's desk might have been placed somewhere in the room rather than against the wall. Notable among these extraordinary craftsmen was Hiromi, who became famous for his lifelike articulated creatures, such as these four okimono in nigurome (brown-patinated copper), each one signed. Composed of dozens of individually crafted pieces, the larger crayfish is about 14-1/2 inches long, the smaller nine inches, the praying mantis seven inches, and the crab 4-1/2 inches across. Hand-fashioned in the Nineteenth Century for ceremonial food service, this Chinese sweetmeats box is in the form of a brilliant acid green melon, the glaze skillfully powdered on to create a natural "orange-skin" texture and depth of color. (Photographically illusive, the color is more intense than shown.) The compartmented interior is glazed in rich turquoise. Approximately nine inches in diameter and 5-1/2 inches to the top of the stem finial, the box is in superb condition, with no breaks or repairs.   « Less
