Delicately shaped, adorned with the simplest of geometric patterns, this ancient vessel may originally have contained precious oils, perfumes or medicines. Aesthetically, its More »
Delicately shaped, adorned with the simplest of geometric patterns, this ancient vessel may originally have contained precious oils, perfumes or medicines. Aesthetically, its appeal is timeless, with fluid contours that speak to modern sensibilities as they surely did to ancient ones. It is remarkable that a functional object should be so beautiful. As we hold it today by its handle, we are aware that others held it similarly centuries before. Across the barriers of time and culture, we are intimately linked with their vanished world. - (PF.2213) « Less

Created during the age of David and Solomon, this simple but charming vessel glows with the rich patina of history. Who can say through whose hands it might have passed More »
Created during the age of David and Solomon, this simple but charming vessel glows with the rich patina of history. Who can say through whose hands it might have passed millennia ago? It was perhaps from such a jug that Samuel anointed Saul King of Israel. Whatever its past, we are aware that it was crafted by ancient hands, held and used by people who lived in a time and place much different from our own. The energy of those vanished lives clings to it still and sets our imaginations stirring. - (PF.2837B)

In the Israel of biblical times, this vessel might have held ointments or perfumes or perhaps an offering of wine or honey. As we hold it in our hands today, admiring its More »
In the Israel of biblical times, this vessel might have held ointments or perfumes or perhaps an offering of wine or honey. As we hold it in our hands today, admiring its simple beauty, we are aware of the touch of other hands long ago. Who might have held it when it was new? Were the dreams and emotions that guided their lives so very different from our own? The vessel's graceful unadorned shape appeals as much to the contemporary eye as it did to the culture that created it. Such artifacts, ordinary enough in their own age, connect us in an intimate way with the world of the past. In its presence, the centuries melt away and the imagination sets out on a journey of discovery. - (PF.3021) « Less

Created during the era of the Kings David and Solomon, this simple yet charming vessel exudes an energy of the ages, glowing from within its surface, richly patinated by the More »
Created during the era of the Kings David and Solomon, this simple yet charming vessel exudes an energy of the ages, glowing from within its surface, richly patinated by the fingerprints of history. Such a vessel would have been a necessity in the ancient world to contain and transport precious oils and unguents. Our imagination is stimulated as we try to picture whose hands might have held this vessel almost three millennia ago. It is plausible that such a jug was used by Samuel to symbolically anoint Saul as the King of Israel. Whatever the secrets of its past, we are aware that it was crafted by ancient hands, held and used by people who lived in a time of religious and political revolution. Although its original contents have long disappeared, the energy of those vanished lives is still contained within this vessel. This jug was once a vital, indispensable part of everyday life in the ancient world. Today, it is even more valuable to our modern lives, not as a container, but as a symbol of the past. This jug holds history inside, it reminds us of the lives, the joys and struggles, the triumphs and defeats, of those who came before us. - (PF.5874)
