In the Israel of Biblical times, this vessel might have held oil or wine, or perhaps a liquid offering at a temple. As we hold it in our hands today, admiring its simple beauty, we are aware of the touch of other hands long ago. Who might have held it when it was new? Were the dreams and emotions that guided their lives so very different from the dreams and emotions that guided their lives so very different from our own? The vessel's graceful unadorned shape appeals as much to the contemporary eye as it did to the culture that created it. Such artifacts, ordinary enough in their own age, connect us in an intimate way with the world of the past. In its presence, we cross the bridge of time and set the imagination on a journey of discovery. - (PF.1596)

During a time of drought and famine, the prophet Elijah went on god's bidding to the town of Zarephath. There he encountered a widow and her son who were also dying of hunger. The widow had only "a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a cruse." By a miracle, these proved enough to keep all three persons fed. The unfailing cruse of oil was no doubt similar in shape to this graceful vessel, of a sort commonly used to hold wine, oil or honey in the Holy Land. We can never know for certain the past history of such an object. But as we hold it in our hands today, our imagination takes endless flight. - (PF.1995)

This charming vessel was created on the island of Cyprus for export to the cities of the Levant. Though small, it is rendered with a fine attention to detail that suggests it held important contents, perhaps oil, balm or medicine. Its decoration of circles and lines is simple but elegant, as appealing to modern sensibilities as it no doubt was to ancient ones. As we hold this exquisite vessel in our hands today, we share our pleasure with those who first held it so long ago. - (PF.2193)

Delicately shaped, adorned with the simplest of geometric patterns, this ancient vessel may originally have contained precious oils, perfumes or medicines. Aesthetically, its appeal is timeless, with fluid contours that speak to modern sensibilities as they surely did to ancient ones. It is remarkable that a functional object should be so beautiful. As we hold it today by its handle, we are aware that others held it similarly centuries before. Across the barriers of time and culture, we are intimately linked with their vanished world. - (PF.2210)
