19TH Century Oil on Canvas, Signed by E. Weber, depicting 19TH. Century Sailing Ships navigating at night by the light of the moon. On the left you can see a silhouette of a lighthouse. This painting has great depth. It has been lightly restored and the painting has been relined. The frame is not the original frame but definetely is a nice 19th century frame that goes very nice with the painting. This is a OIL on Canvas with and signed by E. WEBER. The Weber and Webber family produced many 19th century artists and mostly all did nautical and marine painings. We have had several over the years and they appreciate in value as the years go by. This Canvas Painting measures 20" X 16". The period gilded frame is perfect for this painting and the painting shows very well in this frame. « Less

This is a Limited Edition Iris Giclee Print on Canvas of the Painting S.S. EL SIGLO by Antonio Jacobsen (1850-1921) It is #40 of 450 in the Premier Edition. This reproduction is produced directly on the canvas using state of the art Iris Giclee printing technology. It has been treated for ultraviolet protection and hand varnished in the manner of the original to provide additional surface protection and authenticity. Born in Copenhagen, Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobson came from the family of violin makers, but passed up the family business to emigrate to the United States of America at the age of(21) twenty-one. Living near New York, by 1880, he had established himself as a very successful ship portraitist. Spanning the transition from sail to steam, he provided a record of almost all ships, American or European that called at the port of New York. While his paintings are meticulous and traditional in format, his attention to detail and feeling for individual character prevent his portraits from becoming mere stereotypes. Jacobsen was very prolific and painted until the year before his death. His paintings are in more than 70 museums worldwide including The Mariner's Museum in Newport News, Virginia, The Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts and The Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut. The S.S. El Siglo was a American Flag ship in service from 1901-1934. Built by The Newport News Shipping and Dry-Dock Company for the Morgan Line, she was 397.7 Feet Long, displaced 4508 Tons, and had a width of 48.3 feet with a draft of twenty-six (26) feet. In this painting, the ship sits perfectly in the water and gives a strong sense of power moving smartly under a gray sky. Her name on the bow and the Morgan insignia on the stack identify the ship. This is an outstanding and typical Jacobsen from this period. CARE and HANDLING: While this replica has been specially coated to protect against the effects of sunlight, like any other fine work of art, care should be taken to avoid displaying it in direct sunlight over long periods of time. Clean with a damp cloth or sponge to remove dust and dirt. « Less

Circa 1820-1840. CASARCA TADOMOIDES--CHESTNUT--coloured SHELDRAKE. This Beautiful Duck, pride of Australian Waters,is a bird of the finest plumage. He is called the Mountain More »
Circa 1820-1840. CASARCA TADOMOIDES--CHESTNUT--coloured SHELDRAKE. This Beautiful Duck, pride of Australian Waters,is a bird of the finest plumage. He is called the Mountain Duck by the settlers, and may be more common in the hills, than the low country, since he is seldom found in the latter district. This bird builds in a tree, and when the young are hatched, the male bird carries them in his bill down to the ground. Strange, whose name I have already mentioned, had a opportunity to watch two birds that had a brood of young in the hollow of a lofty tree on the Gawler, and after the male bird had deposited his charge, he went and secured the young, five in number, which he brought to me at Adelaide but I could not, at every care, keep them alive for more than a month. The bird is very large as a Duck, his head and neck are fine green in colour, and he has a white ring around his neck, as also a white band around his wings. It is not a good eating bird, however, as is often the case with the birds of fine plumage. Professionally Framed and matted. There are age marks at the bottom of the print, no doubt from the previous frame. I have talked to several people about doing conservation on this, which would be quite costly for a expert to perform this surgery. Expensive like all good doctors charge to save a life. This was purchased out of a Old Estate on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The other one that was purchased out of the same estate IS MARECA PUNCTATA: CUV. which we have not been able to find as much information. It also has been professionally reframed and matted and has the same conservation problems. It is also referred to in Birds of Australia but without much information. But is a very nice as is the other one. We prefer to sell these as a pair BUT could be tempted to break them up. « Less
