An important antique second half 19th century Austrian gold gilt silver Viennese enamel and hand painted snuff box custom made in one example by the famous Viennese jeweller Hermann Boehm, for a wealthy client who adores Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), also known as Napoleon I. And It does not exist any other example of this snuff box. A domed cover finely hand painted with a portrait of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, after Jacques-Louis David, depicting Napoleon in his famous standing pose with his hand in his vest, wearing his famous uniform of the Colonel of Chasseurs Cheval de la Garde Imperial. A spherical compressed body, finely painted with continuous military scenes with Napoleon Bonaparte on his white horse, the bottom of the Snuff Box decorated with the Imperial letter “N” initial monogram. The inside of the lid bears Napoleon's coat of arms with the Imperial eagle, and the interior of the box is painted with the Imperial letter “N” initial monogram on a Roman shield. Gold gilded silver (900 standard), hallmarked on the collar and the lock of the cover with the letter “A” for (Vienna 1866), and signed in a square frame with Hermann Boehm initials: "HB". Hermann Böhm was a foremost Viennese jeweller regarded as the greatest Austrian practitioner of the Revivalist goldsmith’s work, creating precious Artworks objects made in gold and silver polychrome enamel, Rock Crystal, Lapis Lazuli, and other semi-precious stones. He appointed the bests Austrian painters to paint the enamels. The firm was founded in 1866, (worked c.1866-c.1922) and in the early 20th century was recorded as being Hermann, Hugo, and Max Bohm (a mark is only entered for Hermann), and twelve workers. At the 1873 Vienna Exhibition, they showed a "Tournament Shield and Weapons in antique style, various 'galantries', and jewelry pieces in Limoges enamel", and received an award for merit. His art work was commissioned by the Austrian Imperial court, aristocrats, and other notable and international clients. Hermann Böhm is an important jeweller in Austro Hungarian Empire such as Peter Carl Fabergé in the Russian Empire. In the shape of a boat, finely carved ivory with tobacco grate in the front portion and snuff container at the rear. The snuff hole is the mouth of the mask on the bow of the boat. Carved hull with portholes, and the top deck is decorated with two men in chains being flogged with the inscription around the upfront drapes, "NOVS CHEPIZZONES NOS CHAINES". The stern deck is an ocean scene with sailing ship and bird in flight with inscription "LE FROID ME CHASSE". Silver hinges and clasp. French, probably Dieppe, circa early 1700's. Overall good condition with two small cracks in front lid near hinges and inner base between grater and snuff container.   « Less
