A rare Japanese Fushimi Clay figure of a Japanese General triumphantly riding a horse during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5). Fushimi Clay Dolls were painted dolls made of unglazed ceramic that were sold in front of the gate to Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shrine, starting in the 16th Century at the end of the Momoyama period. Age unknown as we are not up to speed on our Asian marks. The condition is very good, no chips, cracks or repairs. A famille rose palette with yellows, blues, darker reds and aquas throughout. Very nice stone craving, Chinese in origin, late 19th to early 20th c. Superb details on this 8" figurine. No maker marks. The scholar is holding a fan in one hand and beads in the other. There is a chip on the bottom of the right sleeve, otherwise good condition. Intricately carved facial features add a human touch. Cold to feel.

An unusual pottery water dropper (scholar's object) in the form of a three-legged frog. The frog has a sansai glaze of a basic straw-colored glaze with drippings of yellow and green glazes. This water dropper was made with a hole in its back for placing the thumb to regulate the flow of water from its mouth. In Chinese mythology the three-legged frog usually lives on the moon and brings good fortune.
Period: Early Ming (15th Century)
Size: Length = 19 cm (7-1/2 inches), Height = 11 cm (4-1/4 inches)
Condition: Very good. Normal age wear. A minor ding on its left side - probably a kiln ding. This piece was taken to a Sotheby's consulting group in Malaysia 12 years ago and was confirmed to be early Ming. « Less
