Oil on canvas by well known Israeli artist Varodi Joseftal depicting a woman asleep / reading in an interior. Measures approximately 11 1/4 X 11 1/2inches (sight) and frame is 16 1/2inches X 16 1/2inches. Nude sits in front of a window, in a room full of brightly coloured and richly patterned fabrics, plants and patterns, forming an almost abstract design. Freely painted despite the attention to detail - such as the necklace around her neck and flowers in her hair. A serene expression on her face. The figure painted in broad, easy strokes, complemented by the busyness of her surroundings hints at a rich inner world. Signed Varodi in English and Yoseftal in Hebrew, lower right. Gilt wood frame. French enamel on copper handpainted oval plaque depicting a Greek goddess with a cherub. Circa 1800.Wood frame is just under 4inches high. BR>Blue ground. A Greek goddess strides alongside a little cherub, holding up a book. In the background is a hill with a Greek temple, the Parthenon. The vignette is surrounded by a delicate pattern of leaves outlined in gold. There is a very nice gilt bronze inner frame. The outer, wooden frame has been cracked and badly repaired. Exceptional handpainted portrait painting of a woman on ivory. Artist signed. Late Victorian / Edwardian 1880- 1905. Exact origin unknown.Oval site measurement of ivory is 3 7/8inches long and just under 3inches accross.Total length of original frame is almost 8 inches. Frame may be hung or stand alone.Superior quality painting of a very beautiful woman, not quite young but with rich red hair, a marvellous complexion, intelligent expression in her eyes, wide and sensuous mouth. Despite the high-necked Victorian fur collar and sombre dress, the portrait manages to convey the intrigueing character of the woman. Highly professional quality of brushstroke and drawing, use of light against dark and warm against cold. Artist signed C Lide Fratin. Very good condition - no damage of any sort. Early Eretz Yisrael / Palestine signed original water color painting of children picking oranges in original frame by Erna Grossman Kneller. Measures 9 1/2 X 6 1/2inchs excluding the wooden frame.This painting was probably used later in school text books. It is immediately recognisable to everyone who was educated in Israel about 50 years ago. This is the original. A pair of young children are picking oranges. The boy climbs a ladder, followed by a large frog. The girl, a pair of pruning scissors in hand, picks a great big orange. Many more lie scattered around or in the overflowing basket near the ladder. The girl wears a scarf, pantaloons and suspenders holding up her stockings. Butterflies flutter behind her. The painting is signed Kneller, lower right.Very nice, old wooden frame.Both frame and painting are in good condition.
