Magnificent Satsuma Oil Lamp from the Meiji Period. The Satsuma vase is mounted on bronze doré top and base, according to the Japonisme taste that swept over Europe during the second half of the 19th century.
Satsuma artwork most probably from the studio of master Kinkozan.
On one side of the vase, there is a scene from the Imperial Palace. The Emperor, seated higher than all present, dressed in a kimono adorned by gold
kiku/chrysanthemums, appears to give orders to a high ranking official wearing a more modest albeit striking kimono with kiku also, a sign that belongs to the higher echelons of power in the Imperial Palace.
On the opposite side, there is an outdoors scene of a Daimyo with his retinues. The Daimyo, fully clothed for battle, appears to give orders to the samurai encircling him.All of them wear the hachimaki, head band, symbol of perseverance and courage, and seem ready for battle.
The rest of the vase is heavily embellished by
traditional Japanese motifs, rich in gold, red,
purple,cream and vermillion.
Extensive moriage all over the vase.
Mounted on top of the vase there is the Oil Lamp apparatus embossed 'Systeme Double Courant d'Air', signifying the lamp as a 'Lampe d'Argand' type, as it was more commonly known at the time in France this particular lampe à huile/oil lamp.
Finally at the top there is a beautiful frosted
lamp shade with two gold dragons engraved on opposite sides, emitting a sweet and warm light when lit. Obviously, the lamp is electrified.
Dimensions : H 31.49in./80cm.,from the top of the
glass cylinder to the tip of the gilt
bronze leg.
Diameter of the vase top 3.93in./10cm.
Meiji Period, circa 1880/90.

Absolutely beautiful Satsuma Bucket.
Sennin Kinko is depicted riding a giant koi fish/carp, a symbol of luck, prosperity and good fortune. Kinko, a Daoist sage, is known as Sennin in Japan.
According to the legend Kinko was a painter whose specialty was painting fish, which he would never kill or eat. Rewarding his virtuous life, the Dragon King sent a giant koi to carry Kinko in his Sea World Palace. On his way back, Kinko meets Kannon who hands him a scroll illustrating the Buddhist principle of protecting the lives of all
living creatures.
The scene is of Kinko's return and the encountering with Kannon, depicted here as a male God, handing him the Buddhist scroll.
On the other side, a Japanese family of four, two children, having a tea/picnic outdoors. Both children, with scrolls at hand, probably with the same principles as Kinko's, seem busy discussing the Buddhist Principles.
The Bucket is completed with two lovely, smaller depictions of scenic, rural Japan.
The handle is like a thick bamboo cane.
Extensive moriage throughout with traditional Japanese decorative motifs and colours.
Meiji Period, artist signed on the scrolls, albeit signature illegible.
Dimensions: H 11.81in./30cm. Diameter 8.26in./21cm.

Absolutely lovely Satsuma Bowl, depicting early autumn in a tranquil, rural Japan setting.
The dark red maple leaves set the tone of the whole composition, rendered with the redolent Japanese sensitivity of the period. They seem to overflow from the inside of the bowl to all around it. What more could one say, the photos speak for themselves.
Artist signed, Koshida. Meiji Period, circa 1880.

Deeply spiritual Black Satsuma Vase.
The Shaka Nyorai and Kannon both emerge radiant out of the blackness, surrounded by Rakan. The top of the vase is embellished with intricate decorative motifs along two rather large Shimazu Mon.
Exquisite small details on the Rakan robes highlighted in dark red, midnight blue, vermillion, while extended moriage adds depth to the composition.
Artist signed, Dai Nihon Satsuma yaki, Kozan zo.
Meiji Period, circa 1870.
The character on the cartouche top left corner most probably means 'Right 2nd', meaning the vase should be the second item on the right in the display. The vase could have been a part of a larger display, with items marked accordingly as to where in the line-up they should appear.

Four primitive figures on horseback, two larger, two smaller. Carved rosewood. Tall figurines measure 14-15 cm high, and the small ones are 10-10.5 cm high. One of the taller items (see last two images) has been damaged and appears to be patched with filler, this is an old repair, throwing it in for free. Otherwise excellent condition. Said to be antique, ex the estate of a collector. Not my field, so am making no claims. Quaint and very ornamental.

A sensational 8-panel Chinese Coromandel Screen.
The main theme of the screen on six panels plus 2 panels with classic Chinese decorative motifs and objets d'art.
The main theme of the screen is a scene of the summer palace. On the top of the first two panels from the left, there is a cartouche with the title theme of the screen. '府王乃易洽', 'The Monarch's mansion is an amiable, easy place to converse'.
Underneath this cartouche, the Monarch is seated in an impressive pavilion, surrounded by servants and consultants, while a member of his staff ushers a delegation for an audience with him.
On either side of the pavilion, two armed guards watch another staff member, at the pavilion's steps, as he guides a guest towards the Monarch.
To the right of the pavilion, a group of carefree children are playing, watched by members of the household staff.
On the lower part, two sentries flank the entrance of the mansion. On the left, watchmen are blowing their horns, signalling new guests have arrived.
On the right, the three guards watch carefully the group of priests or monks who are met at the gate by another two staff members. On this sentry, a huge banner flutters, bearing the Commander-in-Chief character, notifying everybody that the Monarch is in residence.
The far right panel depicts the idyllic of the mansion. Away from the formal activity, among lush vegetation and a peaceful lake, guests or members of the imperial family are enjoying their day.
The reverse of the screen is full of a very nice rendition of bamboo plants.
Over the years, the screen has acquired a magnificent patina ranging from a fiery to a mellow, matte gold, depending on the source of light.
Softwood with multiple layers of lacquer. The design hand carved in both low and high relief and very skilfully painted.
Late Qing period, circa 1890-1910.
Dimensions : H 94in./239cm, W 148in./376cm.
