Meiji Period (circa 1868 to 1912) pair of Japanese cloisonné vases. Main motif of a phoenix or hou-oo bird are in a pendaloque panel with a rust-red glitter-specked enamel background. Rear panel has butterflies as decoration, same background. Body of vase is black enamel with flowers and leaves. Butterfly band on shoulders, and styised flower band on neck. Plain neck and foot rim, scales pattern with rust red small circles border. Inside is rough enamel, aqua blue, faded. Brass body. Left and right pair. Vases measure 24 cm high and 98 cm diameter. Condition: one vase is in excellent condition - the other has a chip in the neck border, a shallow chip/crush area to the lower flower border, and a very small white chip.   « Less

MEASUREMENTS: Height: 17.5cm. (6.89 inches) Diameter at the base: 11.3 cm (4.45 inches) CONDITION: in good condition considering its age, showing its age and usage with its natural old dark patina. The bronze is, in fact, darker than it appears in the pictures, because we had used a strong light during the photographing to show the details of the bell.
