P. Aelius Hadrianus was born at Italica in Spain in 76 A.D. having lost his father at the age of ten, he was placed under the care of guardians, one of whom was the future emperor Trajan. He soon embarked on a military career and in 100 A.D. Hadrian married Trajan’s grandniece, Sabina, indicating that Trajan was grooming him as an heir. Hadrian was appointed governor of Syria during Trajan’s Parthian war, and was adopted by the emperor shortly before the latter's death. Much of Hadrian’s reign was spent in visiting the provinces of his vast empire where he greatly improved the defenses of the frontiers. In Rome he co-designed and built the spectacular temple of the pantheon; at Tibur he constructed a luxurious villa; in Athens he finished the monumental temple of Olympian Zeus and erected a library. There is little doubt that Hadrian was one of the most cap able emperors who ever occupied the throne. He devoted his whole life to the improvement of the state. His rule was, for the most part, firm and humane and he was an import ant patron of the arts. He died at Baiae on July 10, 138 A.D. after a long illness. His hand-chosen heir, antoninus pius, succeeded him. These stunning silver coin earrings are a testimony to the timeless contributions that the emperor Hadrian made to western civilization. The wearer of these earrings will at once feel an affinity for such an aesthetically minded emperor and will carry on the legacy of this most famous of ancient western empires. - (FJ.5435) « Less

Alexander III, king of Macedon and later king of Persia was the most legendary and visionary leader the world has ever known. He was born in 356 B.C., the son of Philip II of Macedon and his headstrong queen Olympias. While Alexander was growing up, his father was bringing Greece under Macedonian hegemony, with the ultimate goal of destroying the Persian Empire. In addition to extensive military training, Alexander was tutored by Aristotle. Relations between his father and mother were often strained and both Alexander and Olympias have sometimes been implicated in the assassination of Philip II in 336 B.C. at this time, Alexander became ruler of Macedon and leader of the unified invasion force against Persia. He led his army across the Hellespont in 334 B.C. and won decisive victories, leading to the downfall of the Persian king Darius III. Alexander conquered Egypt and founded a new city, Alexandria, which became one of the great capitals of antiquity. Alexander and his army marched as Far East as India and created one of the largest empires ever known. Alexander died at the age of thirty-three and his kingdom was divided among his followers. P. Style: Dupondis
Medium: Bronze/Gold
Constantius I was the father of the illustrious Constantine I (surnamed the "Great"). On the establishment of the tetrachy Diocletian appointed him Caesar, after which he took charge of Gaul (France). Following a long series of battles and many victories Constantius arrived in Britain where he showed mercy and restored its defenses. His son was freed from captivity, having been held by Galerius Augustus, and fled to Britain in time to help his father in his last battle against the Picts. Afterwards, Constantine I was proclaimed emperor by the army at York. Despite later propaganda by his proud son, Constantius I was known as an able general and a generous ruler. This beautiful bronze coin shows the very powerful profile of a strong warrior, with a thick beard finely trimmed and wearing a laurel wreath. The legend reads FL. VAL. CONSTANTIVS NOB. CAES, meaning the coin was minted while he was Caesar (Ca. A.D. 293-305). This striking coin presents the boldness and wealth that epitomized the Roman Empire, suitable to someone who possesses their own strength of character. - (FJ.5953) « Less

Medium: Bronze-Gold
Constantine I, called Constantine the Great, was the first Roman ruler to be converted to Christianity. He was the founder of Constantinople (present-day Istanbul), which remained the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire until 1453. Constantine the Great unified a tottering empire, reorganized the Roman state, and set the stage for the final victory of Christianity at the end of the 4th century. Many modern scholars accept the sincerity of his religious conviction. His conversion was a gradual process; at first he probably associated Christ with the victorious sun god. By the time of the Council of Nicaea (325), however, he was completely Christian, but still tolerated paganism among his subjects. Although criticized by his enemies as a proponent of a crude and false religion, Constantine the Great strengthened the Roman Empire and ensured its survival in the East. As the first emperor to rule in the name of Christ, he was a major figure in the foundation of medieval Christian Europe. « Less

It can be said of a few men in history that they were born to the purple, and Constantine I was definitely one of those rare men. Born of Constantius I and Helena, he was tribune at the court of Diocletian. He fought along side Galerius against Persia (A.D.228) and when Diocletian abdicated Constantine hastened to Britain to join his father, and later to be proclaimed Augustus. By virtue of his great courage, savvy judgment and quick mind, Constantine defeated all opponents, was welcomed by the Roman senate as liberator, and soon became master of the Roman world. These special coins were commemorative issues minted to celebrate Constantine's founding of Constantinople (A.D.324) on the site of Byzantium. They show the goddess Constantino polis wearing the imperial mantle and holding a scepter. On the reverse Victory stands with her foot on a prow, holding a scepter and leaning on a shield. The person who wears these earrings can do so proudly, knowing the coins were part of a great empire ruled by a great man during an exciting period in history. - (FJ.6092) « Less

Origin: Asia Minor
Circa: 400 BC to 300 BC
Collection: Greek Silver Coin Earrings
Medium: Silver/Gold
One of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Rhodes' prosperity was especially vibrant during the period these coins were minted. The island was ideally situated for trade between new cities founded in the East and the eastern Mediterranean. Her five harbors were active centers of commercial traffic, bringing in vast wealth. In 305 B.C. Demetrius I Poliorcetes laid siege to the island, which met with heroic Rhodian resistance and the withdrawal of Demetrius after a year. With the proceeds from the sale of his siege equipment, Rhodes was able to finance the building of the famous Colossus, a statue of their patron god Helios, and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It is this radiant deity who is featured on these handsome coins. He is depicted as a young man of great beauty with flowing locks of hair. On the reverse is a rose bud with very delicately engraved petals. These coins are a reminder of a splendid age, radiating their own unique warmth through the ages. - (FJ.6470) « Less

Medium: Gold and Ruby
The teardrop-shaped body of the earrings is comprised of two sections, the upper having multiple "panels" each with spirals in ascending order. Around the base are larger spirals from which the coins are hooked by means of double interlaced rings. The gold coins themselves are Turkish and covered in beautiful sinuous script. Crowning the top of each earring is a cabochon ruby, meaning they are cut convex, polished but not faceted. A wonderful contrast is created by the smooth surface of the rubies with the delicate lattice effect of the gold, proclaiming the perfection of nature as a perfect match with the skills of a superb goldsmith. - (FJ.6561)q « Less
