Antique snuff box. Black lacquer inlaid with silver in a pastoral scene with a cow in a fenced meadow. Early 19th century, possibly late 18th century.3 1/2inches accross front, 1 inch high and 1 1/4inches front to back.Black lacquer box with original hinges in excellent shape. Top is inlaid with silver, enhanced with engraved detail, depicting a cow in a fenced meadow. Strong Chinese influence seen in the fence with stylised flowers and simplified trees. This theme was common in late 18th - early 19th century.Generally excellent condition except for one small section of missing silver - barely noticeable unless you look for it. Black with a band in turquoise blue and decorated with trailing blossoms. Metal geometric patterning on entire outer surface. The inside is plain sky blue. Underneath black feld. Delft blue and white decanter handpainted with a windmill in a landscape on one side and flowers on the other. Measures 7 1/4inches high. Classic round body with handle and spout and a fitted lid. Round foot. All parts decorated in blue patterns and flowers. Front has landscape scene of a house and windmill behind flat fields, birds flying overhead in a lightly clouded sky. Underneath is marked N.J. 50/12 1/2 Herman Jansen. Distillers Since Schiedam - 1777 Holland. There are original stickers on the decanter including one that reads partially: 1910 Manchester Industrial Exhibition. Condition is very good. There is a tiny chip on the back of the base. This clay pipe, dug up from the mud of the Thames, is many hundreds of years old. Since we are told that the smaller the bowl, the older the pipe, we believe this example may date as far back as the early 1600''s. In his book ''Collecting Old English Pottery'', J.F. Blacker says that although Brosely was the most famous manufacturer of these pipes, they were also made in Winchester and Exeter. Measures 5 1/2inches long. General condition is very good. There is a minute chip on the rim of the bowl, quite negligible and perfectly acceptable for the age of the piece. Outstanding painting on this Russian lacquer cigar (SIGAR) box / case that resembles a spectacles case. The painting is almost identical to one found in Godden''s book on Minton, page 97, entitled, ARABIA. While most of these cigar cases were done in Germany, this one is Russian. Dates to mid 19th century.Measures 5 1/8inches long and 2 7/8inches wide.Rectangular with canted corners. Back is black lacquer with gold SIGAR written amidst delicate scrolls. Gilding is largely worn. The front is spectacular: it is a handpainted scene of Rebecca at the well - actually a lady with a jug. Extremely beautiful oriental face under a rich turquoise and white silk turban. A red cloak, hinting at the important home she comes from falls off her shoulders and is balanced by the ruby bracelets around her arm. The condition of the entire front is very good with no wear to the gilding and paint. The quality of the painting is vastly superior to any other box like this I have seen.The back and front lacquer boards are held together by leather folding sides.
