Antique pair of miniature paintings of the Mughal emperor Shah Jehan and his famous wife, Mumtaz Mahal, on very old paper. Done in India, circa 1950''s. Measurements: 9 X 13 More »
Antique pair of miniature paintings of the Mughal emperor Shah Jehan and his famous wife, Mumtaz Mahal, on very old paper. Done in India, circa 1950''s. Measurements: 9 X 13 inches. Rare to find a matching pair of miniature paintings. Done in the Classic tradition that originated in Persia centuries ago, using a very fine (single hair) brush and colours taken from stones and other natural elements. While the paintings were executed about 50 years ago, the paper they were painted on is much older - well over 100 years and possibly taken from an old book, which is very common with this kind of painting. The figures of Shah Jehan and Mumtaz, for whom he built the Taj Mahal, are each charmingly seated on a prancing brown horse. Both have a sort of green halo around them with very delicate radiating light. The matching brown horses, in matching poses stand on matching grassy verges with little flowers and rocks. The sky in both paintings is a strange swirling mass of blues and greys. The figures are beautifully painted in regal attire with lots of rich, gold highlights. The faces finely detailed, especially the hair. Horses depicted with no less attention to detail and elegant, flowing lines. Around each painting is a border of fine flowers en grisaille as well as illuminated, fancy script in Arabic with gold highlights. The backs of the pages with their original script has been shown in the ''photos as well. Besides the natural wear at the edge of the pages, the paintings are in very good condition. Status: For Sale Reference#: 3942 Condition: good Year: 1930 Title: ANTIQUE PR MINIATURE PAINTING SHAH JAHAN WIFE HORSEBACK « Less

Exceptional and unique miniature painting from the days of the British Raj in India. Circa 1880 - 1920. Watercolour on paper. The total measurement of the paper is 4 7/8 X3 inches, but the painting is in a rectangle 3 1/2 X 1 7/8 inches. The painting depicts a game of polo, played on horseback between the British officers of the Raj and a group of Mughals / Indians. One team wearing European style clothes and hats, the other wearing turbans, Asian attire and sporting bristling moustaches. Galloping, prancing horses outstandingly depicted - the power and movement of these fine animals was clearly appreciated by the artist, who took pains to show them in marvellous detail. The background, painted in lighter tones is no less interesting. On the left in a garden bower is a group of relaxing dignitaries. A cluster of Georgian style buildings can be seen in the center of the background, up on a hill, making it clear who the rulers were. On the right is a charming vignette of a large tree behind a wall and in the tree are perched the local population, who presumably were not invited to the game, but watch with no less interest. The painting is exceptional, not only because of the detail and sensitivity of the artistry, but because it depicts an age and world gone by. Generally very good condition but the delicate paper is worn on the edges and the painting needs to be framed and protected. Antique miniature painting from the British Raj in India with the Royal Coat of Arms, as used by the British Government. Painted in India circa 1880 - 1920. Measures 3 1/4 inches wide by 2 1/8 inch high. Watercolour on cardboard with real gold embossed Coat of Arms. Mounted and ready to be framed. The painting depicts a British horseman on a prancing horse. A raised stick in one hand. He wears a European style hat on his head. A sage and two women walk behind him. Behind the bushes he is riding through is a hill, with a wall curving up it''s slopes, a fairly common sight near forts or temples in India. Below are more Indian style buildings. Minute detail - from the smiling face of the rider to the beautifully depicted horse with flying mane. Most unusual and interesting is the embossed coat of arms, done in gold above the hill. It is the Royal Coat of Arms under a Crown, as used by the British Government. The painting is in good condition. French Victorian oil on canvas painted portrait of a young woman in a red hat. France, 19th century. Rectangular frame measures 14 1/2inches X 16 3/4 inches. Painting itself More »
French Victorian oil on canvas painted portrait of a young woman in a red hat. France, 19th century. Rectangular frame measures 14 1/2inches X 16 3/4 inches. Painting itself is seen through an oval 8 3/4 X 11 inches, but is actually done on a rectangular canvas. The painting depicts a young woman wearing a white shawl over her shoulders, a black necklace around her neck and long gold earrings - typcically Victorian in style. She also wears a stunning red hat with a huge bow in the front and at the back is more of the white soft cloth that makes her shawl. Her hair is a deep, rich auburn (reddish - brown). She has full, red lips, a wonderful complexion and a fabulous expression of a strong and beautiful woman. The portrait is much more than just another pretty face, but shows a woman of character and class. The mottled green and brown background sets of the red of her hat, peachy cheeks and mouth very successfully. The artist is clearly highly accomplished and professional. His name was printed on a gold lable on the front of the painting, but has, unfortunately, largely disappeared, so we do not know who he/she was. Clearly, a highly proficient artist. The frame and gold surround are not in good condition. They are original to the painting and have various losses / cracks - see photos. The painting itself IS in good condition and is protected under glass. All ''photos were taken through the glass, so bear with the slight reflections and play of light.
