This galleon ship tile by Rookwood is one of the cleanest and most pristine examples I have seen. From the collection of Bernice Lyon, one of the first collectors of American Art Tiles, this example has a sharp mold, was never installed, and is in superb condition. The waves protrude proudly from the front of the tile undamaged. Rarely does one see and this form so nice. The front has gentle crazing, the back has one small flake off the tope edge. In the style of the famed Woodstock artist William Hunt Diederich, this smoking standing surpasses the functional and enters the realm of art. The curving form makes a superb statement when displayed against a wall. The piece is all hand hammered and forged, with the hinged beak being cast aluminum. The top of the beak opens and exposes a removable tray or ash receptacle. Originally made as a smoking stand, the beak can also just as easily hold candies, or simply display as a object of folk art. No makers mark is found on the piece, and it remains with it''s original patina. It is a superb piece that can easily be used in interiors from primitive through modern.
